Napoli's Belgium winger Dries Mertens, 29, met Manchester United representatives for two hours in the lobby of a hotel in Italy earlier this week to discuss a potential move. (Daily Express)

Shouldn't the headline read Manchester United make illegal approach for Dries Mertens?

Do we know for sure that Napoli have not given United permission to speak to their player?
If so, then yes, the headline should read that.

So, yes, that's an illegal approach.

Yes, and dead secret too, in the lobby of a hotel in Naples for 2 hours <doh>

Rafael just got fouled by one of his own teammates and had to go off for treatment.
As he's playing for Lyon against Roma in Europe, I somehow doubt he'd swap places with his brother Fabio, though.
4th in France and playing in the Europa or 3rd from bottom and playing for Boro?
Not much of a choice, for me.

Fazio's just given Roma the lead with a great header, though. Lyon chasing the game now.
Good player, just completely unsuited to our high line.
I thought it was our clearest case of a bad buying decision. Fazio is both very good at some things and definitely limited. We needed him to do things he couldn't do, and we should have realized that before we bought him. Conversely, Vertonghen and Alderweireld were brilliant buys, and have been keys to making our system work.

So according to you, it's not an illegal approach if representatives of one club meet with a player contracted to another club without the contracted club's consent if somebody not related to either party sees them meeting?

Do me a favour. Pick up a second class stamp and look on the back of it. You see that small, empty space there? The part that's sticky? Good. Based on that response you made, you could use that as the blank canvas to write your entire knowledge of football regulations - and when you've finished with that, you still have plenty of room to write down every meaningful and insightful comment you've made on this forum in the past few weeks.

Or you could just use it as a stamp, given there wouldn't be a single thing written on the back of it.

Why do you believe it's without the contracted clubs consent, because the story is no fun the other way?
I will leave some space on the stamp for you <ok>

Are you sitting comfortably? Good, let's begin.

Over the hills and far away, Manchester United forgot to say
"Dear Mr & Mrs Napoli, can Dries Mertens play for me?"
Rather than be nice and make a bid, instead they went to a hotel and hid
While they were there they had a chat, with Mertens behind Napoli's back
You don't need the eyes of an eagle, to know this approach is illegal
And if you want to argue otherwise, then I guess we will all surmise
That you have no clue what you're talking about, nor do your words have much clout
So rather than keep posting here, shouldn't you pull your head out your rear?
As your head is firmly stuck up, and we'd all be happy if you shut...

Since you have plenty of room on the back of the stamp, you can write down what you think the last two words are. Maybe if you're really clever you might guess what they are!

What do you imagine this bit means

The 29-year-old Belgium international, who is out of contract in 2018, is said to be stalling over a new deal as he explores his options.

Maybe his club just might know he is talking to others, just a thought like :emoticon-0100-smile

On the other hand (in a far away world) both him and United may just be daft enough to spend 2 hours together in a very public place clandestinely discussing a move whilst random reporters were wandering past <ok>

So tell me, when did Man Utd submit a bid for Mertens? And was this bid accepted by Napoli?

Mertens is contracted to Napoli until June 2018, meaning that the earliest he can meet with representatives of another club to discuss a potential move without requiring Napoli's consent is January 2018. As today's date is March 10th 2017, Man Utd representatives would require Napoli's consent to meet with Mertens - but as a bid has not been made, there is no consent.

So as much as I hate to be ghoulish, your response makes you look foolish
As you failed to provide a scrap of proof, that your club has not been uncouth
As even the blind Mr Mole, knows this is how Chelsea acted when they approached Ashley Cole
And when they were caught they paid a lot of money, and I'm sure their owner did not find it funny
He was so angry he spat a lot of phlegm, when he found the rules apply to them
So maybe it's time for you to grow up, as your silly posts make people throw up
As they are riddled with such banality, making us think you have an abnormality
So perhaps you should ask Jeremy Hunt, if he can treat you for being such a...

Plenty of room on the stamp.
