That provides absolutely no consolation at all. I'm not saying this to sound like a pretentious prick, but after we'd beaten you 2-0 in January, I really wasn't too concerned with what you were doing. Don't get me wrong, I was delighted to beat you on your own turf, as we don't do it often. But all I was mainly focused on the day after the game was whether we had what it takes to win the title. And I started to believe we had in it in us. As time has gone on, it's become abundantly clear that we're not good enough. Which sounds mental as we're unbeaten in 10 league games and, in most seasons gone by - even in spite of the 3 consecutive draws - our form would historically be good enough to surmount a title challenge. Regrettably, we're up against a totally different beast and the players have succumbed to the pressure at a crucial stage of the season. The players' body language on the full-time whistle on Friday night told me all I needed to know. That they are emotionally exhausted, physically spent and, crucially, they don't have the belief they can do it anymore. No amount of post-match sound bites or positive player interviews can disguise the sheer desolation visible on everyone's face. So finishing ahead of you grants me no comfort when my eyes were on a bigger prize that was firmly in our grasp, yet we've let it slip.
23rd April 2023 a day that will live in infamy. The day a team REALLY died.God bless the fans that travelled to watch it.But best wishes to Newcastle. You deserve it!
Why did the ref allow Weghorst to intimidate March before that crucial penalty. Well, I'm sure he wasn't wishing him good luck!
Would it have something to do with The FA handing the ref a script before the match kicked off? All Manchester Final. No ifs, no buts
City v utd final, have to find something to do that day, roots need a colour, split ends need attention or dig out a veruca with a blunt razorblade
The Battle of the Bald. Whose shiny head will rule Manchester? Can they have it oop north somewhere? Seems a shame to have all those locals stay in London.
If Citeh are on for a 1999 equalling "treble" on that day, you may want to watch (as Man Utd will be honour bound to prevent it) .
Perhaps that is what the "alert" malarky was about today (preparing Londoners to be informed if a surge of people from Surrey to Wembley threatens to tip the city on its side) .
At 8.30 this morning some Del Boy on the car park at Warwick Services on the M40 had his trestle table full of Utd scarves, flags and hats and was doing a roaring trade. He’ll be back on 3rd June - with his trestle table full of Utd scarves, flags and hats
Remember the old days of neutral venues for semi finals? Especially when the "neutral venue" for a NLD semi final was Old ****ing Trafford???
I don't call anything after 1970 the old days, Maggie! (This was 2001 - and we lost - so somethings remain consistent!)
Fair enough! though completely wiped from my memory. Thank God I have the 'old days' to remember happy days did use to happen!
I'm only slightly jealous of the success you got to witness, Maggie... just slightly Happy days for me is just hoping Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez don't gift the ball to the opposition for a goal - and I haven't had many happy days this season!
Yes.Spurs were the team to avoid in those far off cup days. Today, every team are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought!
