Van Gaals prefered system is 4-3-3 but he stated when he took control of United that he would have to go 3-5-2 with the players at his disposal. If he wants to go back to his prefered system he will have to buy players like di Maria at some point.

How do you think the 3-3 would look - which current players do you think fit and which positions still need players?

He's built a team that plays attractive, winning football and competes for the league and champions league

What have Man Utd achieved with the quarter of a billion pounds they've invested in the squad since Ferguson left?

Agreed, last season. We will have to see if he competes for the Champions League (unless you mean taking part, in which case many managers "competed" for the league and Champions League last season).
Check your maths for the money spent since Fergie left, and check how much Van Gaal has spent this year compared to Brendan so far since they are the ones being compared after one game (let`s see how the season ends) <ok>

That' the thing I don't get. The players at his disposel aren't suited to a 352 surely?

You don't have 3 good CB's, you don't have anyone that's played wingback at all (the fact A.Young & Lingard were playing there shows that) and only have 1 fit in favour forward in Rooney at the moment until RVP comes back.

Surely with Janujaz, Young, Lingard who are all wingers, you play them in a front 3 with Rooney in the middle (or Mata one side as well and allow him to tuck in).

Then you put Fletcher, Herrara and one other in the midfield 3.

I think he was hoping to go with Young and Valencia as wing backs (both capable of this) and Evans, Jones and Smalling as centre backs but injuries prevented it. With Raphael and Shaw fit the first choice may change in defence and with Carrick fit the midfield will change. Once all of our injured players return the whole system may change and di Maria will be part of this.

Since Ferguson left you've spent about £140m on players (and got about £9m back in sales), plus about £50m on Di Maria about to be spent, plus the shocking new Rooney contract which is worth about £80m

We've reduced our wage bill and spent about £200m under Rodgers (with about £115m back in sales) <ok>

Van Gaal himself is looking to spend £120m+, about the same as Rodgers this year (when including Balotelli), though vastly more in net terms

Sorry, never answered this bit. We still need a solid defensive mid-fielder unless he drops Herrera back into his prefered position, Vidal (unlikely) or Khadira would be good.

Net terms means **** all, i have said this many times on here, the players you sell are an assett, therefore are part of the total. If you sell your old car for £5000.00 and buy your new one for £6000.00 does this mean your new car only cost £1000.00?

Football is a business and about balancing the books, so net spend is relevant Diego.

If you bought a car for 6k and had a car you'd already paid 5k for you'd be 11k out of pocket.

<whistle>

We earn more than you so this entire discussion is irrelevant.

Our spending is more than covered by our income. With or without champions league.

The analogy should be expanded on... The other car still has to be serviced, road tax paid and such while you drive the other one to work

So I can see Valencia donkeying up and down quite well actually as wing back and I can see ref must Rafael doing so too.... But young???? No way on earth the diver can cut it. Also smalling?? Jones?? Evans???? Smalling is a crock? Jones is a bit of a donkey and Evans is distinctly average

But in any event to make it work the midfield 3 must be very strong and mata won't track...

IMO rojo adds to the team at lcb and Herrera is at least a cm and do Maria adds hugely in place of mata but you still need another cb and cm next week... Which is not blind imo

<laugh>

I said the CURRENT manager of the year who is CURRENTLY playing great winning football is a good manager <ok>

You used a PAST winner who won the award managing a DIFFERENT team who has since moved to a CLASSLESS club and been FIRED for being a POOR manager <ok>

Similarly you HOPE that your CURRENT manager can even come close to what Rodgers has achieved given that all his good management was done DECADES ago when you probably weren't even born <ok>

#deludedmancs

Yeh, you ****ed this one up pal. Never mind!

The world cup? :grin: You really should stick to things you know about, try tennis or something!
Just to put me right, what has Rodgers achieved?

There's a book about what Rodgers achieved. Cracking read apparently. Can be found in the comedy section.
