"For Van Gaal to defend himself," said Wenger. "I didn't understand really what the problem was.
"Man United went a bit longer in the last 10 minutes - I found it completely logical.
"If I am in a game in the last five minutes, we have a free-kick and we have three monsters up front, I do not say 'play a short ball'. An intelligent team knows how to exploit its strong points."
Have to say I agree with Wenger. Man U needed a goal, they had Fellaini on, why not use his ability in the air?
Made sense to me and it worked, Man U saved a point when they looked destined to lose.

The fact that LVG felt he needed to rant and defend it showed more than the actual use of long ball tactic

The old Man Utd team would have said they needed 2 goals <ok>

And they they lost 2 points <ok>

I think Wenger is having a bit of a dig because Van Gaal is trying to say they aren't a long ball team.

And for the people who don't understand why its not a successful strategy, they should look at how "long ball teams" have usually finished in the premier league. Simply doesn't work over 38 games.

Van Gaal doesn't have a **** what he's trying to say.

The best I can work out:

They are not a long ball team, but the decision to bring on Fellaini is justified by the chances it creates, and those chances are created by playing the ball long to him, but that's ok because sometimes Man Utd have higher possession stats from playing the ball side to side in defence for the first half, and because they also play long sideways balls as well as long forwards balls.

By same token it wasnt a master stroke either. Stick the big man up front and get the ball on his noggin makes sense so there's nothing wrong with it but it wasnt anything inspired either. What disappoints was actually the previous 80 mins and the fact it came to that bcos of it.

Come back when we do it for 38 games. But if it's in the last 10 mins in a game where a goal is needed it can work and has.

Villa v Leicester... Atrocious game of football.

Is is it possible for both teams to go out the cup as they both deserve to on this showing

It didn't seem so bad to begin with but maybe the equality of the awfulness gave a false sense of competition
