It looks like it. Was a large Kop end which was out of propotion to the rest of the ground. Went to a game against Everton there in 1960. 30,000 there of which about half were in that stand. A lot of pissed up scousers and a lot of holidaymakers there purely to see Stanley Matthews. The realisation of that saw him sent out with his leg heavily strapped up. Apparently they feared unrest if it hadn't been announced in advance that he wouldn't be playing as that many holidaymakers were there purely to see the great man. please log in to view this image
Great little story today on radio re JA. One summer his wages had been halved and he found out Stanley Matthews wages hadn't. So he went to the owner and asked why. The owner said "but he's a better player than you" to which JA replied " not in the summer he isn't. !!"
Another photo in front of that stand. Loved the quote about when he had joined the media. Howard Wilkinson, acting England manager, strode in after a dull 0-0 draw against Finland and snarled "Before you lot start criticising how many caps have you got?". Back came the reply " 42, as you're asking" from Jimmy Armfield. please log in to view this image
First time at Bloomers in the 70s we got put in the big Kop which was split down the middle. In the 80s we got put the side stand to the left but I think the roof had been taken off the Kop by then, so the view in the pic is unfamiliar.
This picture, before they put the roof on, gives a better indication of how that Kop end was out of proportion to the rest of the stadium. please log in to view this image
