so england will obviously **** this up and lose by 50 runs or something today but......

thinking on this "new" philosophy of playing t20 in test cricket i have a question:

What changes to the line up would you make based on picking the "best" t20/ODI players and telling them to swing away like mad?

Roy?
Vince?
salt?
Malan?
Livingston?
Buttler?
moeen?
 
root seems determined to not let bairstow get his century... just as a little revenge.

125 not out while Bairstow is stuck on a miserable 97.

342/3 with 36 runs to win.

not sure that works but this shows how good/confident root is and how predictable the bowling was.

In ye olden days you might try predict a bowler but england were charging a lot of Indians today.

not one of them changes their intent seeing the charge or this and went ofr a body shot or bouncer etc.

If you tried this on with Anderson he'd skull you.

india really bowled to a slot for england there.
 
So the new England tactic seems to be because they're **** at 'test' cricket, stay in the game and then smash out a run chase. ie turn it into a 1 day game.

Pretty much every game has gone to 5 days hasn’t it? They’re playing test match cricket…..successfully so far….maybe they just haven’t realised it yet….

Its not about how many days its the style, they're playing 1 day but in a test setting.
Like I said, they are making sure they stay in a matches by playing the 1 day style, which given that England are pretty good at it means they'll always score big enough, and then in their last innings going full 1 day and smashing it around the place.

They tried the traditional 'test' cricket, build an innings, build partnerships, maneuver the ball around, pick up singles etc but all that happened was they edge the ball to the slips or leave a ball they shouldn't.
Now they're looking to play shots and score boundaries.

1 Day style of cricket over 5 days.
 
They are probably at about a 5 an over or something.

We've seen plenty of 4 an over stuff in the past so while it's positive it's not necessarily odi.

The bounced India out yesterday in effect. That's not odi.

India had nothing to go to as plan b and bowled to a really defensive field with lots of 1s and 2s available. England bowled and attacking catching field.

I can’t tell if your annoyed by this? Would you rather they try and leave the ball constantly, not score any runs then edge one to slip?

Tbf Crawley left the ball really well in second innings, wore them new ball down as well as the Indian bowlers and then allowed root and Bairstow to play shots against ball that wasn’t moving.

'Test' Cricket is old fashioned, who wants to watch Boycott or Gower bat for 3 days and make a 50.

Much rather England play to their strengths, why not smash the bowlers around if you can. Why not let Bairstow play how he can.

Well i have seen a lot of scared batters coming out with not faith and defending like hero's an going for 10-20 or then collapsing so having a go has to be better

But sides will quickly realise they can get very aggressive with the bowling and put these guys on their arses.

Today England faced defensive bowling.

Yesterday they faced defensive batting.

Day 1 they did well to get India in trouble but then let them recover to 411

England were in trouble til bairstow got in.

This is a top India side but one in some transition of coaches etc. They didn't have a plan for bairstow that worked. The end.

England will eventually get handed their head playing like this but its a lot better than 0-5 to Australia or whatever

Lose swinging rather than tamely

Cricket is evolving. Half the test team don't play T20 for England mate. No one can denigrate the performance we've seen in the 4 tests this summer. Can they do it overseas. We'll see,...

a) there are other 1 day forms of cricket
b) they'll all have all played 40-50 over games for the counties
c) they'll all have learnt playing limited overs (thats all you do at youth and club level)

And if you read the comments then I said England are playing to their strengths, rather than trying to play how test is perceived, how people like Boycott think the game should be played.
 
Interesting that you should pick up on the Boycott thing as in his time the side would have been made up of 5 or 6 batters only, and 4 or 5 bowlers who only bowled and asked to take the wickets. Some of the bowlers in that era, and for all cricketing sides at the time, would have been grateful just to get the ball off the square, let alone smash someone back over his head for 6. The batters got the runs, the bowlers the wickets, that was how it played out.

The modern day bowler has so many shots in his armoury that they can get a quick fire 40 which means that the scores will and have been, getting higher and higher. The one thing that this new cross over between the T20 & ODI style of run chasing getting in to Test cricket is that if England keep wining or doing very well in it the rest will follow. It could be a great time to watch cricket if you have never got it or thought it to be a boring watch...
