Tower of London illuminated for Armistice tribute
Around 10,000 flames have been lit at the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the end of World War I.

The tribute, called Beyond The Deepening Shadow, will run each night until Armistice Day 2018

Excellent project to create a footpath, the Western Front Way, tracing the length of no mans land from the Belgian coast to the Swiss border, 630 miles, is slowly being realised. That’s one I’ll go for in retirement, excellent food and drink every step of the way, and more importantly proper history and respect.

This is my take on it, McLean does it to score political points, yes we all understand he comes from Londonderry where many died on “Bloody Sunday” but he doesn’t grasp the meaning of the poppy in my honest opinion which is to commemorate WAR DEAD not soldiers or their actions, but all those who die in service nor does it glorify war, or those who Kill in zones of conflict.
Secondly he refuses to wear the poppy, his lawful right I suppose but to condemn a nation for the action of a few whilst accepting £40,000 per week of that nations money to ply his trade in said country smacks of Judas and his 40 pieces of silver.
If he is that concerned about it , he should go ply his trade elsewhere, or keep silent on the matter or just not play on or near armistice day thus not giving the press or opposition or even his own club fans the chance to abuse him.

Totally agree.
After much thought I have decided to go to France on Saturday to the candle vigil at Albert (near Amiens). Both Mrs Ellers and I have lost a relation there. I will take a picture of my Grandads brother with me and visit the memorial. Then on Sunday morning, I will be at the memorial service in Thiepval. I believe that Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron will mark the signing of the armistice. <rose>

Unfortunately it's endemic in Irish Nationalist sentiment. My son came home from school yesterday to tell me that one of his friends, a Celtic season ticket holder, had been thrown out of class for refusing to sit through a Modern Studies lesson to discuss the origins of the Poppy fund, saying it was against his beliefs. That a child of 15 or 16 has had this drummed into him goes to show how ingrained the hatred and sectarianism is, even here in Scotland. I doubt whether his family have even been to Ireland in a couple of generations. What hope do future descendants have if all the hatred is just passed down like a family heirloom - the Unionist bigots are just as bad around here too, although they will respect the Poppy.

I had to bite my tongue today as I read something really stupid by a friend of a friend on Facebook. They were basically moaning about the poppy and wearing one. They somehow managed to bring Brexit/Imperialism/colonial and other stuff into their argument.

For me at the end of the day wearing the poppy is recognising the sacrifice of millions of people and saying we won't forget what you did.

I don’t care if people wear them or not just don’t start telling me that I shouldn’t when I (like many others) have had family and friends serve and killed in wars.

Without the sacrifice of those millions people wouldn’t have the freedom to bitch about it…they forget that.

The local ITV news are repeating an interview with the then last tommy who fought in The Great War. Harry Patch recalled witnessing an Army Captain going along the trenches and shooting anyone who refused to go over the top. Later he saw his Cornish pal ripped to pieces by shrapnel. For Harry and all those brave Tommies. We will remember you
