Most of the furore is over James McClean, an Irishman who plays in England. Nothing to do with the 'Old Firm'.
The point is, it has **** all to do with football, and the sport would be better off if it had **** all to do with it. Let those who wish to celebrate go to the cenotaphs, and let those who want to watch football go to the stadiums.
That particular 'furore' must have passed me by. But if he doesn't want to wear a poppy on his shirt, that's fair enough imo.
They played the "Last Post" at the North London derby yesterday. I'm not aware of any resentment on the part of Arsenals not inconsiderable Irish support.

Yeah, I saw that. Watched the game. I'm not aware of any resentment from other teams either when they're made to observe a minute's silence. I think that's generally because the Nigels 100% buy in to the poppy farce, even when it's blatantly evident it has nothing to do with football. No other sport is milked in the same way or has the same emphasis put on it to hold these stupid pre-match commemorations. I mean, if it was some sort of tradition then fair enough, but it isn't - it's only happened in the last decade.
It's happened in the last decade because of the Afghan war. Plenty of people disagree with the war, most of them still respect the young, mostly working class people who lost their lives.

Yeah, I'm sure they do, except it doesn't need to be done at football matches. Why football? The poppy doesn't even register with other sports, mainly because it's left up to the individual to make the personal decision about whether they wish to wear one or not. Sadly, football has now been hijacked and it gives permission to the majority to enforce their views on the minority. It's wrong, and due to being forced upon us means that the only way the brave minority can decry this disgraceful celebration is by making their voices heard during the minute's silence. If anything, they are are courageous ones for speaking up when all others remained quiet.
It's been on the news, you know, on the TV. And the radio. And most other forms of media communication with the general public. There's even huge thread about it on here...

I'm with Jif with regards to politics should be removed from sport. Wear a poppy if you want ( not necessarily on your sleeve [monocager] ), don't wear it if you don't want. Stand still for a minute or two - or sit down if you don't want - but let's not be forced to do so when at an event unconnected to politics. A question that is springing up within this thread is - why should people be constrained to 'respect' [seemingly] only at sports venues ?- if you was at your local supermarket, they may invite you to join them in a minute's silence - but they wouldn't bat an eyelid if you just continued to take stuff off the shelves - and if you dared to walk out without payment, the store detective isn't just going to stand there whilst the seconds ticked by..... and the surgeon operating in the hospital isn't going to just look at the open chest cavity etc etc etc. - can you imagine the carnage and mayhem if airline pilots 'switched off' for a couple of minutes at 35,000 ft.
We can all pay our respects either privately or in the correct, more dignified surroundings than a football stadium - where, as I said, for the next 90 minutes all that will happen is that 22 men will engage in another war - where respect doesn't come into the equation.

The Poppy appeal and Poppy Scotland are charities. They have no political affilation. They are non poitical.
They have been politicised, especially in Scotland, by the plastic Paddy brigade. That in turn has led to the huns being ever more vociferous in their backing of it in an attempt to make the stupid taigs look even worse.
