Well this might be perfect timing for you - I used to live in Bristol and know some good ones - all are sort of on the way to Rovers' ground from the city centre if you're willing to explore a tiny bit.

    - Highbury Vaults (St Michael's Hill, near university) Was Smiles now Youngs, lots of real ale (used to be in good beer guide), cheap but good food, cracking walled garden, very popular
    - Prince of Wales (Gloucester Road) (organic food and beers)
    - Cotham Porter Stores ('proper' cider house, real gut wrenching loony juice stuff, food limited to dog-eared cheese triangle sandwiches but amazing place nonetheless, Cotham)
    - Wellington is the nearest pub to Rovers' ground and is pretty good, Bath Ales pub, not sure if they let away fans in or not though.
    - Hillgrove (Kingsdown, directly up the hill from the bus station) another Bath Ales pub, great beers
    - Full Moon and the Eclipse* (close to bus station, bottom of Stokes Croft) was a bit dodgy when I lived in Bristol but is meant to be pretty good now - nice outdoor courtyard and organic grub and beer.

Am getting dewy eyed for the place now. Have one for me ;)<cheers>

Called at the New Inn this weekend. New landlord is young (first pub) but pleased to report the Shropshire Gold was fine.

Just looked up Good Pub Guide on Amazon and it has one review talking about the fact that they are now charging pubs to be in it. It used to be quite good as it was based on readers recommendations. I assume it still has this system but they ask pubs to contribute. I will have to take a look at it in a shop before making a judgement.

in an attempt to knock the front door of the railway inn down at 13.15 last friday, it dawned on me she was closed, so via clive i repaired to the tilley raven, what a fabulous pub with 4 shropshire beers and draught green valley cider from topsham, which they can only get when someone is going to or coming back from devon. i had luinch there and that was excellent.

i got lost finding it but if travelling from the south, go into wem past the shurch and to a t jnct. turn left and tilley and the raven is about 1/2 a mile on

i had a delicious pint of wye valley hpa in the church inn ludlow on saturday evening, and the hobsons at the tilley raven on friday afternoon was superb. sadly i had a little too much and even a tilley raven 5oz steak and chips kept me on half rations of ale at yorton. incidentally the church inn ludlow had 2 of big nevs six bells beers on tap. beers here were around the 2.90/£3 mark. tilley raven and railway inn yorton, were more reasonable at 2.50 a pint
