‘the waters would get choppy’

I read that as Watters would get the chop. Could still be correct!

Another great post Brizzle. After the excitement of our win over the Canaries I was expecting more against Reading. Still early days but hopefully we can turn over Brum and get back on track.

Brizzlebluebird and Mrs Brizzle's musings from the Pick & Shovel

So, after a little jaunt to Henley on Thames for a night away, the missus and I returned home to digest the weekends sporting events.

The Positives

  • A good quick start by the seems of things and an early goal for another of the newbies brought in to add a more dynamic and attack minded style of play (not to mention a correct scorer for me in the prediction league :emoticon-0105-wink:).
  • A first run out for Philogene & Etete
  • The managers honesty in his assessment at the end.
  • We're not Man United! (Or Swansea).
The Negatives
  • Nelson... We can't comment too much as no highlights have been seen yet and we weren't at the game, but being as he was brought in as a replacement for Ng and he gives away a penalty that ultimately galvanised the opposition and gave them a way back into the game, you have to think Ng will be walking straight back into the 11.
  • Denting the feel good factor. After coming away from the CCS bouncing at how well everything seemed to be knitting together, yesterday was a very timely reminder that we have a long way to go. The possession stats were still good but if we don't do enough with it then we are in danger of being like our little cousins down the road... Pretty football can also be pointless if it doesn't yield results. There's a fine balance to strike.
Mrs Brizzle Says
As much as she loved her night away, she can't help but be disappointed that both the mighty Bluebirds fell to defeat along with her beloved Wurzles (in front of a sellout crowd no less).

To continue a nautical theme after taking a trip up and down the Thames, she thinks the lifeboats may already need launching at Ashton Gate and has suggested we may want to get a distress flare ready at the CCS too.....

Personally I think she's going a bit overboard and Captain Morison will steer us right and keep us on an even keel during the season.

This is a disappointing set back but we all knew the waters would get choppy occasionally on this journey. We just need to stick with it, hoist the main sail again next time out and set course for three more points.

Now, pass the port Mrs Brizzle... The sun is over the yardarm. <cheers>
Another excellent read sir (and ma'am).

You don't need the monarch's permission any more so get the rum out and splice the mainbrace.

just watched extended highlights on the city website.

as my glass is half full I remain optimistic.
regarding style of play, I could see what they were trying to do. quick, one touch passing with players comfortable with the ball at their feet. An upside from last week is that we got the ball into the box quicker and more often this week. not always the best cross or pass, but the ball was in the danger area.
Wintle becoming the heartbeat in the middle of the park. o'dowda popping up on both wings. Ojo looking slick but sometimes takes the wrong option.
feel a bit sorry for watters. makes good runs and pops up in good positions but isnt getting the breaks. he badly needs a goal though.
harris is a pain in the arse for opposition defenders.

on the down side, not sure why Nelson made that foul as the player was running away from goal. a soft one to give away. we didnt seem to have the intensity of last week with the press and we didnt get as many of the 2nd and 3rd balls. difficult to say if that was down to us or Reading.

will be interesting to see the team that is put out tonight and if anyone can force their way into the team for saturday. Etete probably the most likely candidate.

Have only seen the few minutes from the football league show so far... Absolutely awful misjudgement by Kipre to allow the ball to go over his head and put Nelson in a difficult position, but as you say, he should probably have let Ince (?) get his shot away and see if Allsop could make the save rather than (gently) tug him back.

Agree on Ojo. I felt he was quite similar against Norwich, good in spells without causing any real damage.
I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a rest for the Birmingham game and is replaced by Philogene or Tanner. Though I guess if any of our other wingers show well tonight, they all have a chance.

Definitely still glass half full territory though. It took a screamer of a winner to beat us and there really wasn't much between us and them again.

Had we gone two nil up, who knows what would have happened from there!?

the city website have been posting brief highlights, extended highlights (20 mins) and the full game. they did it for Norwich as well.

heres the 20 mins.

EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS | READING | Cardiff (cardiffcityfc.co.uk)

Agree about Ojo. Didn't impress me when he was on loan with us two seasons back. Tricky feet but no real pace for a true wideman, and when he comes inside often makes bad decisions. Obviously possesses footballing skills but produces them too infrequently for me.

There was talk about him being a better No.10 of sorts than a wide man and that could work. Despite Sawyers' goal against Norwich, he's looked a bit off the pace in that role to me. Having said that, we seem to be heading in the right direction regarding passing rather than lumping.

Early days I suppose, but that supply route through the middle is still the missing link. Etete up top will be stronger but will do no better than Watters unless we get that right.

I feel its something that can be fixed on the training ground.
There were apologies from a couple of players when they realised they'd missed a run.
I've started looking out for watters in games. He is working hard for the team and does get in some good positions. On occasion against Reading he made some good runs either getting into space or taking defenders with him. A few times he either wasn't picked out or was inches away from getting a touch. As I've said, he desperately needs a goal.
In the last couple seasons we've struggled with any build up play.
Having seen the whole of the Norwich game and extended highlights of the Reading game, the build up play is pretty good with the final ball letting us down, either from delivery or anticipation by the attacker (not just Watters).

I hope Morision can work on the attack, not just the strikers, rather than bin another No 9 only to see them flourish elsewhere.

I think thats a long winded way of agreeing with you Sparkey.

previously we needed a complete overhaul. that's finally been done, now we need some refinement.
