I really like him as a person, we are the same age and remember him being sold to Man U to help us balance the books in what was a dark period for us financially, Captain at 18 how many top flight players can boast that, not many I'll wager. And after he was dismissed as assistant manager under Ancellotti our form dropped substantially. Get well soon Ray, Top player, Top coach, and Top man.
Well done Abu. Only heard of this awful news a short while ago. If you hadn't posted this thread i was going to start one myself. Gutted for him and his family. The reports don't sound good but i sincerely hope he pulls through. An absolute legend for this club. Even when he was on analysis in the studio and supposed to be neutral he couldn't stop himself saying "we" when he would talk about his beloved Blues. As you rightly say he was sold to Utd to balance the books and keep the Club afloat. Was it a million or something like that at the time ? What would he be worth in this crazy market ?!!! Honoured to be able to say i saw him play many times in the flesh. Apart from being a Chelsea Great, he was an absolute gentleman. I know i shouldn't be saying "was"....hoping and praying he pulls through.
My first game at the bridge was against sheff utd in the 77/78 season. This season we got promoted from the old div 2. Anyway,we won the game 4-0,and Ray scored a blinder. The game was on The Big Match the day after.I'm sure many blues fans will remember the goal i'm talking about.
A fantastic goal from a truely great footballer. Get well soon Ray. On a side note, Hereford United no longer exist and I believe they’re now known as just ‘Hereford’ and are well down the football league - a few divisions below the Conference.
They are just about to win the Southern League Premier. I watched them beat my home town club Redditch 0-2 yesterday. You are correct it is no longer Hereford United they are Hereford FC. They were forced to start again from the Midland Combination Premier League. It was quite a lucrative time for some of the local teams their support funded many an improvement to lots of teams and facilities here in the midlands. Nearly 2.000 away support at some games that normally see 200 at best. They still average 3,500 at home they are a really well supported club for their level.
Thanks for that information. It’s like the effect that a certain one of Ray Wilkins’ former clubs - Glasgow Rangers - had when they were forced to play low league football. Glasgow Rangers were also taking thousands of supporters to clubs that would only ever usually get a few hundred at most.
BB it is happening more and more due to the rules relating to bankruptcy. Making a club like Hereford play at level 7 is laughable and poses H&S issues at the games they had to play. Clubs that normally only see a few locals and one man and his dog Spot at games have to deal with Hundreds and sometimes more, and the hooligan element that the one time bigger clubs have, (I do not count Hereford in that statement. They were very well behaved yesterday) can pose problems that the extra revenue is offset by the cost of security.
