Rangers have held talks with Michael Beale about the Queens Park Rangers manager succeeding Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Discussions with Beale, who spent three years at Ibrox as part of Steven Gerrard's coaching staff, are believed to be at an advanced stage.
Other candidates have also been considered and spoken to, but the 42-year-old is their number one target.
An appointment could potentially be made by Rangers next week.
Beale took over at Loftus Road in the summer, with QPR currently seventh in the Championship following a run of four defeats from five games.
Van Bronckhorst, who was in the job for just 12 months, was sacked earlier this month with Rangers nine points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.
The Ibrox side also recorded the Champions League's worst-ever group stage campaign, despite making it to last season's Europa League final.
Under Gerrard, Rangers halted Celtic's bid for 10 league titles in 2021, with Beale then joining the former Liverpool captain to Aston Villa for the following campaign.

Yup, I mean its already a terrible look for him but to plunder us as well would be really ****ty.No idea what areas they need to strengthen, but I'd be more concerned about him taking Willock etc with him in January.
I would guess he's decided he wants to go, so unless he gets an insulting offer then he'll accept the terms he's offered. Would assume any offer would be more than he's on now anyway.Really disappointed in this, unless Rangers is one of those clubs he just couldn't say no to (like Olly with us) it feels like he's misled the club, the fans and the players. What if talks with Rangers fell through, surely he's burnt his bridges now?
If we were really on the ball, then there would be something in his contract about signing the clubs players if he moves on. If such things are possible. The club would know he was going to move somewhere bigger, though probably not within 6 months!Yup, I mean its already a terrible look for him but to plunder us as well would be really ****ty.
You answered your own question, Rangers were in the Europa League final about 6 months ago.Incredibly frustrated if he goes because he seemed to have us going in the right direction. That said, I can't be too annoyed, at least not in the way I would have been if he went to Wolves.
We have to accept that the managers, not just the players, will use us, and other Championship clubs as a stepping stone to 'bigger' things. The question for me, as others have said, is whether or not Rangers are really a bigger thing? A couple of big matches a year in the Old Firm derbies, then away to Ross County, whose 6541 seater stadium, Victoria Park, looks straight out of League 2, or even lower. No challenge week to week, but guaranteed European football could be an appeal.
Odd decision if he chooses to go when we are doing so well, but his choice and we'll move on. Quite like the look of Critchley if that could work out.
