We were last in the Premiership during the 2014/15 season, and before that from 2011 to 2013 for two seasons. The thing with parachute payments, is that used wisely, and if you can use them wisely, they basically just keep the big clubs at the top, and the little clubs unable to bridge the gap. We probably had to use most of that money to cover debt, and so couldn't invest it in moving the club forward.
Although it may seem unfair, is it any more unfair than the Premier League system. Last year, Southampton finished 17th, and their prize money, calculated by the league position, TV deal and commercial income was £113.3 million, whereas Man City, who won the league, got £161.3 million. (

Dare I say, the American football draft system, where the lower teams get first pick the following season, does seem a good way to even the playing field. That said, I wouldn't want to see teams awarded for finishing bottom...but maybe the huge gap in financial rewards could be reduced, and the money more evenly spread across the clubs.
