He's at the club doing a bit of coaching and wants to keep playing, so why not?
He's not registered as a player, so I don't know if that would cause an issue for starters. As part of the "Player to Coach" pathway he'll be spending time with multiple clubs, I'm sure if he wanted it that badly he'd have his pick....

Another note on Gary Locke, who was playing for Chelsea in that game, is that he's a QPR fan. He and I travelled together on a supporters club coach to Villa when we got promoted to division one in 1969.
