He was brought in when the idea was to completely revamp the entire first team squad. A couple of seasons in the Championship bringing in (and through) younger players. Then, unless doing exceptionally well, he would have gone - to be replaced by a much higher profile manager to take on a settled team with the orders to add a few more players and gain promotion.
If it didn't work then he would be the fall guy. And so it has proved. As TF said, he was saddled with a core of senior players who were not offloaded and then the goal became promotion - something which I feel CR was much less capable of providing than other, more experienced managers.
It was a similar thing to Redknapp, although he was expected to get rid of all the "bad apples" AND gain promotion AND push on - all in twelve months. Harry, in the main, turned to older players that he knew and thought that he could trust and control. Bringing in younger players would have been a very big risk and there would have been a good chance that promotion would have been off the cards.
I think that a new manager might be able to spur us on to promotion, but we won't be any better placed in the Prem than the last two attempts.
