The BBC rightly gets a bad press for a lot of things. I think Radio 4 is excellent though and a cornerstone of British culture.

There aren’t many programs on it that I don’t like. You’re often learning or getting insights into a host of different topics.

This cultural Life, Front row, Desert Island Discs, From our own correspondent, In our time, Money box, science, etc.

Are there many other listeners here and which programs do you listen to?

My boss always has it on in his cars so I leave it when I drive them, you’re right it’s an excellent station and I now have it on in the house.

If ever I am feeling happy, I just put Radio 4s Today programme on in the morning... that gets me back to my normal depressed mood.

At 6.30 pm they often have a comedy 30mins, it is usually well written and puts a smile back on my face.

There was one piece that really stuck in my mind about a successful young lad, in creative arts iirc, describing his life journey. He grew up on a council estate without many positive role models to look up to. Got in with the wrong crowd, drug dealing, and got badly injured in an assault. A chance encounter gave him the opportunity to do something different and break out. That one person or organisation meeting a troubled teenager at exactly the right time.

There must be thousands upon thousands of similar cases where talented people need someone to believe in them or offer the right help. It's a two-way effort of course and individuals don't always need to be handed things on a plate.

Yeah, I don't listen to it on a morning much for that very reason!

Today Programme, The Media Show, PM, Any Questions are all good. The Limelight series of drama is good too, I listen the that on catch up.

You're right,a cornerstone of our culture, sadly being eroded as our Britishness is being increasingly lost.

I have always listened to the BBC Radio 4 , I used to work alone accompanied by Humphries, Bragg , etc., the levels are sadly lower now but still better than most of the crap elsewhere , comedy has been lost completely imo though. Count Arthur was the last decent atempt for me.
Desert Island Disks is still maintained, thanks to our own L. Laverne.
BBC Radio highlight for me tho. has to remain the John Peel early shows at a time when he was way way ahead of the game.
I used to record them all , then listen it the next day , and edit the tapes, magic. Used to do it with BBC classical stuff too , I once had the whole Wagner Ring Cycle plus Christen and Isolde taped from the BBC Radio , magical to work along to it, then walking along the beach with it still ringing in my head happy days those.

tend not to listen the radio that much when I am in the office

but home, tend to listen to Greatest Hits radio ( for the Ken Bruce show and for popmaster)
tend to stick to 5Live

Matt Chorley has a good show on in the afternoons

cant do radio 1 as that just for young people with no music taste
radio 2 is going down hill

Radio 2 is hitty missy. Can be really good sometimes and then ‘what’s this?’ at others.

Used to listen to a lot of Radio 5 but not as much now.

Reading that again and the "From Our Own Correspondent" made me smile, I once met Kate Adie and she asked me to research some Sunderland related material for her personal use , I was a nobody at the time , still am , after spent a considerable amount of time tracking down the info . I wrote to her about my findings, and am still waiting for a reply. :emoticon-0100-smile

Humour is so personal and it changes with time. I used to enjoy the Infinite Monkey Cage but find Robin Ince slightly annoying now.
