Three or four years ago I was the same as you (and I'm only 23).

Is it really racist to say that you feel disconnected from your national team because so many players are black? Maybe, but I feel like that, and frankly I don't care what people think. I've watched the U-21s in the past few years and seen England sides with 6, 7, 8+ black players, and thought, "what the **** has happened here?". Look at Mo Farah - he's black, he was born in Ethiopia, and his parents are Ethiopian, but anyone who dares say he's not really British gets slaughtered.

His actually Somalian...

Do your ****ing homework.

Ban him.

I'm seriously offended by Eriks comments and he shouldn't be allowed to post here any longer.

Lets all PM MalteseMick.

Unfortunately you all seem to be forgetting disgraceful monkey chants a couple of years ago when playing Spurs. Although these were targeted at Gareth Bale , Adebayor was playing.

Harry rightfully criticised this and rightly so. Whatever must Adebayor and other black players thought that night?

I thought the Snakepit were singing "He looks like a chimp..." at Adebayor a couple of season agoand couldn't believe it, I felt totally ashamed and disgusted until I was informed that my ears had deceived me from all the way over in the River End and there were in fact cleary chanting Gareth Bale's name rather than Adebayor's <doh>

Still makes it a bit dodgy though as has been season

Oh aye <doh>

It was 2:30am if that's any excuse...

Ban him.

**** off, Mopey Dungflinger. If they want to ban me from this board for holding a different opinion, that's their prerogative. It does call into question just how much 'debate' can take place on a forum where everyone has to agree with the Supreme Leader

Clearly racism is a complex and emotive topic. In an ideal world everyone should be treated the same regardless of ethnicity, skin colour, sex or any other means used to place people in certain groups. Sadly we don't live in an ideal world. An interesting question is how people become racist? We are not born with it. Im sure if you placed a group of babies in a play pen and one was of a different race the others would not pick on them. So must be learnt from somewhere. I guess for the most part it is because people are scared of people different to themselves as ridiculous as it may sound. Therefore education from the youngest possible age has to be the answer to stopping such ignorance.

Now I believe the situation has improved greatly, as is shown by a comment on facebook being newsworthy. However I do believe in some instances the mass media coverage can be detrimental. As many people who have young kids would know, if you say they should not doing something...they do it anyway. Similarly Id imagine could be said for racism, some people think it is cool to do it. The media has a tough balance between wanting a story and educating people that racism is wrong. I am in no way saying the encourage it, just that they want a story and can get the balance wrong on occasion.

Media campaigns are great in raising awareness of an issue but more needs to be done in educating people of all ages why it is wrong. Many don't even understand the origin of many racist terms used.

Likewise as some have mentioned, people placing themselves in certain groups can have a detrimental effect. Bit of "it is us against the world" attitude which can end up with people having less sympathy.

Basically more needs to be done but sadly it will probably never be completely eradicated.

I call my son cheeky monkey all the time! He is white.

I just see monkeys as being mischievous and all over the place, nothing to do with skin color or anything?

You have to be so careful these days as I wouldn't have a clue and might offend someone! Seems that things can be taken out of context sometimes.

Yeah agree. Racism is stupid people are people, there are some stupid people and there are lots of people who accidentally say something and are ostracised for it like the Wheel of Fortune South Park depicts so well. When I was at school we had a teacher we called monkey man.... is that racist?.... we didn't think of it as racist his face just looked like a chimp. He did kind of hate anyone calling him that though lol

But racist? I'm not.

No, you're just an ignorant, small minded bigoted prick with a chip on your shoulder as big as a house. Any chance you could **** off and crawl back under whichever rock it was you crawled out from? And take your copy of the Daily Mail with you eh <ok>

I've posted a series of factual posts and observations about my experience of/with minorities. I haven't said anything offensive.

<doh> Oh dear!

I am not defending his posts but why assume that all people who read the Daily Mail are racists! Are their opinions worth less than every one elses? Especially those of the far morally superior Guardianistas and Independent readers I suppose!

Every time there is a discussion like this we always end up loosing forum members because of it.

Last time it was Redruth and ILD, now Gandy and Rob. What's the point.

I confess, I am a Guardianista.

Lets talk about the Nazis!

There's some kind of rule that once you do there is no point in carrying on the discussion isn't there?
