Racism doesn't affect me but it is hard to find anything that would be offensive about my race. I'm a mixture of English, Welsh and way back when a dab of Irish too. Others may hate the English (Scotties, Taffies & The Mick in particular it seems if you look at this forum) but I can't say I've ever heard a slur that has made me want to react in any way.
Being white also means I haven't had anything said to me that I find upsetting about my colour. Honky, redneck, limey, pommie, slave trader etc just makes me chuckle, I don't find it offensive. As white people and in particular British white people have been top dogs around the world for centuries it is us that have denegrated others with racial slurs. I guarantee we could all reel off at least 100 racial slurs for people around the world. Add disability or sexual orientation to this and the list could easily be doubled.
I can't tell a black man not to be offended by monkey chants, if it upsets him then so be it. If I were black I don't think I would take kindly to having bananas thrown at me. If black football players think that not enough is being done to stop racism I'm not able to argue as I don't know to what level, if any, abuse needs to be reduced to where it stops being a problem.
Sam Allardyce was on the news saying he hadn't heard any racist chants for years. I would suggest he walks around Upton Park with the West Ham faithful before a game and listens to what they are saying about Somalians. Just because football fans don't openly abuse black players on the pitch doesn't mean they don't hold racist views. You can stop someone saying racist things but can't easily stop them having racist thoughts. I don't see a change happening in the near future and Kick It Out might be on a hiding to nothing.
