I'm surprised that people haven't come across the word epistle - not just in the biblical sense. Any time someone writes a long letter that goes on and on it's commonly referred to as an epistle.
It's probably an age thing as well. People occasionally still say 'is that gospel?' for 'is that true?'. Or 'that came out of the ark' for something that looks really old. There are still a few vestiges of biblical references in common parlance.I see it used every once in a while, but it's not commonly used in modern language. Words tend to come in and out of favour though, so it may make a comeback some day
