Quinny WOULD be right....If the pubs were full of "hardcore", or "good" supporters.....but they're not. They're full of mams, dads, next door neighbours, Joe Bloggs......and Mrs Miggins's.....who enjoy having a few drinks and watching a game of football on telly. THEY'RE NOT TRUE SUNDERLAND SUPPORTERS, but they could be, if they could be tempted to come to the SOL.
Getting on their case is NOT going to tempt them. If anything, it's gonna get their backs up. This is why I believe Quinny is getting it oh, so, wrong.

OK, Davros - maybe you are right.

I cannot contradict you, never having been there (in a local pub) on a match day.
 
I can't comment on Sunderland but down here where I live a mate of mine runs a pub that shows all the 3pm KOs and it's saved his business. It's full of villa fans, most who are young lads in there 20's who want to drink watch the game then go out in the town. He gets about 300 in every sat.
 
aye alot of bars went to the wall with the recession. Asking people to not show the match so people will go to the ground (more likely they'll just go to another bar) is an expensive principle to hope for.

Needs more incentive to get more people. europe maybe, 3 year season tickets like the mags did for ppl to save money / tempt the borderlines. More consistant performance (dont beat chelsea away and lose at home to notts county). Basically though i think the biggest thing is time. Longer we do better for the more the crowd will swell with the people who effectively choose between newcastle and sunderland, the durham's the gatesheads the peterlees, so on and so forth.
 
Agree with above. To be honest they tried to stop illegal music downloads and that did not work, the people who make money in the music industry are the ones that think outside the box. The big problem is Sky and the Sky 4 who effectively make all the decisions. Milliband could be a stroke of genius for us because the only way things will change is legislation to break Skys monopoly.

It would be very interesting to go to the pubs and give everyone free tickets to the match, see how many got off their arse and went.
 
hi every one just got in quinny just has the club close to his heart he played infront of us and thought wow ive been to arsenal and man city but nothing compares to playing in front of these fans and prob played the best football in his life infront of us i would like to think so anyway ,because what great player he was in my eyes ,he then retires to have a bit time of and he aint happy looking at the way the club are going lets face it we were doing crap, instead of just sitting back and letting the club go to the dogs he thought im going to do something about this these fans deserve better the rest is history what he did he came in to reshape the club from top to bottom he will also have sold the club and the supporters to short after drummervill decided they wanted out short has put vasts amount of money into the club to give it stabliity the club is going foreward at a quick pace but im afraid the supporters are not and i dont blame him having a go now and then wouldnt you if you were in his shoes
 
Attendances haven't varied much at all over the past two seasons. Pycho's figures show that we're only 130 people down on last season and 57 down on the previous season. This is probably due to the recession biting harder the longer it lasts.

But Pshyco's figures show more than that. Newcastle, with a smaller population than Sunderland, have consistently higher gates. But then how many times have they been relegated in the last twenty years? How many 15 point seasons have they had? Once you've got Newcastle's confidence, one season in the second tier won't significantly hurt it. Not even the Ashley effect will hurt it ! But once you've let the population down one too many times, it takes an awful lot more than six good months to bring them back. Sunderland have let people down consistently for half a century now, and I reckon we'll need at least two whole seasons of top eight success to bring them back.

I think Niall and Ellis have done a marvellous job here. But they'll need to be a lot more patient before we hit the 45,000 mark. You can only hurt someone so often, and then something in them snaps. And it doesn't mend easily.
 
Why is everyone blaming the supporters?
It's neither the club's nor supporter's fault.

It's the landlords who show non-licensed matches to turn a profit.
They are the greedy sods in all this.

I know that a license to show Prem games costs an arm and a leg, but the pubs showing games illegally must be raking it in at the expense of the club, supporters and pub owners who have paid the fee.
 
Point for the club to note.

Our attendance is always comfortably inside the top ten in the country. Not bad for a club who have only finished twice inside the top ten teams in God knows how long.
So I would say to Niall with the deepest respect.

When the club start to out perform our fans consistently, then you can legitimately have a go.
 
Quinny runs a business. What he is doing is trying to get people to put money back into the business. His only error in his comments is that maybe he should have praised the supporters who go week in week out and travel up and down the country to see us. He is right about the pubs though.
 
I've supported SAFC since 1953/54 season and was a season ticket holder at both Roker and the SOL. I gave up going to the matches after our 15 point season and have been back only once since. I'm still obsessed with the Club and want them to do well. Frankly, my fifty odd years following the lads have had precious few highs and a lot of grief. After the 15 point season I decided that I needed to see tangible evidence that the Club was being run professionally and had the ambition to become a consistent top ten side with aspirations of eventually winning the odd trophy.
So far so good Niall but I have seen too many false dawns with SAFC and as far as I'm concerned the jury is still out. Keep up the good work and you might eventually win back supporters like me.
 
He's spot on. Illegal broadcasting is not helping us at all atm! We need the revenues and if we are to reach Europe and continue our push up the league we need fans to start coming to the match.

Davros I have to say I agree with your classifications of the fans, but what Quinny is saying that those "fairweather" fans need to get a grip and stop wasting their money on alcohol and start spending it on the club so we can push forward!
 
I'm going to take a slightly different view to why the attendance is below expectations...When we were doing well under Peter Reid, the atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with vocal support coming from all areas of the stadium which made it an exciting place to be...These days, the North Stand often creates about as much atmosphere as the old Highbury Murial, and at times it is only the fans in the South West Corner who are making the effort to support the team to the full... I dare bet that if the SoL once again became a stadium full of colour and sound, the crowds would increase, as it would once again become the place to be...
So the point I'm trying to make here, is that it is the fans who are going on a regular basis can make the difference by waving your scarves and singing your hearts out for the lads, and creating an atmosphere that the people watching in the bars will want to be a part of...
 
what an absolute disgrace of a post. you should be utterly ashamed of it. this is my total point i make all of the time about people not interested in going to matches but claiming your a fan. people slave their hearts out to attend games and you think the unemployed should be let in for a pound? i would not think so, if anything the unemployed should be banned if thats the way you want to do things. get a grip

i know mate. my score is becuase im told by my source as to the scores being aimed for within the game week. ill never be perfect but im very close mate. and im not contreversial, i just have my beliefs and will epxress them and love my country
 
Lads the one reason crowds are down is price. The fault is not with the pubs, they are attracting the people who dont want to spend £30 to get in. I appreciate it is cheaper than most at the SOL but in our area in particular a lot of people's jobs are under threat and they cannot justify shelling out so much to go to the game! Our crowds are still higher than most so surely we should be embracing that. Consolidate where we are for a while, get Milliband plugging into the worldwide market, and a few years down the line when the economy in the region picks up the crowds will gradually return.

that is absolute bullshit mate. people that watch a match in a pub wll spend around £20-30 anyway so it totally and utterly cancels out the benefits and negatives of your point. ridiculous. take it your one of these that dont go

Spot on.I keep posting this. Quinny never ever questioned the loyalty or support of SAFC fans in financial difficulties.The gap on and off the field between ourselves and the top Five is enormous.Mr Roubles spent over £70 million on deadline day.That's more than our annual revenue.As chairman I expect Quinny is under pressure to fill the stadium and we have no divine right to expect Ellis Shortt to spend millions every year to keep the club going.Potential profits in the Future? Maybe but I can't see them unless we do our bit.
