Haven’t seen today’s game but the description of Austin is what I saw against Barnsley, and then he scored a real strikers goal. To be honest I don’t think you can ask much more of him nowadays than to score fairly regularly. As far as I can remember his body language when things didn’t go perfectly for him - when the pass wasn’t exactly where he wanted it - was poor even when he was in his prime, and he was never a great chaser back. Now you can’t ask him to chase a through ball, he hasn’t got the legs. Though he is handy defending set pieces. And he will score goals, and balancing his time on the pitch with Dykes and is proving effective - we haven’t lost for ages. We just need to temper our expectations.

Think you are about right Stan.

When you need a striker...and when you need someone to be unselfish for the team.

Dykes was what we needed late in this game

Another game of two halves. Coventry were the better side in the first half and we could have had no quarrel if they'd gone in ahead, but we dominated the second half and deserved to win. Warburton has developed the happy knack of changing things for the better with his substitutions and formation changes. On the Austin debate, I stick to my view that he's on his last legs, but he still has the desire and he will still score goals at this level. He can't play 90 minutes though, and was totally ineffectual today. Dykes looked like a proper centre-forward when he came on and won the game for us. A word too for McCallum, who had a very good game at LWB.

Isn’t that the best kind of striker ? One who can play **** for 89 mins but for just 1, be in the right place at the right time.

I am tempering my expectations and expect Charles to score 30+ goals this season and for us to win the league by only 10 points ;)

Happy Birthday Ubers.
Coventry so accurate and fast on the long ball...had us beaten...but then they take if their two front players...doh and thank you.

We grew in the game... And Dykes came on like a tornado... The payer he replaced ( I won't mention names as I will get shouted at for being disloyal) was really not at the races...or perhaps he was at the races.

Overweight, slow and uniterested.

Oh and Johansen is the best captain we have had in years. Pushing and applauding his team.. making Dieng take all the plaudits at the end ( Dieng really kept us in it.)

Really love this team. Live their spirit skill team spirit. It was so great...

But Coventry were very good

Dykes replaced Chair - "overweight, slow and uninterested"? Didnt think he was that bad, not Austin either if you meant him.

I can accept that Austin isn't fit and he's always been slow, but I'll be amazed if he's uninterested.
Looked pretty interested scoring the last minute equaliser against Barnsley.

Anyway, nice to see Dykes score again.
Austin's blocked shot led directly to Barbet's goal. He had a couple of others blocked too. Dykes was the game changer though.

Great if does actually score - as he did against Barnsley - but we can't afford to have too many games like today where he contributes nothing.

Again though Strolls, isn’t that what makes a good striker as well ?
For example, Sir Les is lauded as being brilliant by most QPR fans….but if memory serves me right, he had more than his fair share of poor games where he didn’t show up.

I think you need to spend some time reflecting on what you just said. Then come back to the group and apologise. <laugh><laugh><laugh>

But he did though……that’s what I remember anyway…..am I wrong ?
I’ll take it on the chin if I am but that’s how I remember him….amazingly good for a few games followed by a couple of poor showings. On a regular basis

I am probably one of those who could just see no wrong.
What I do firmly believe is that his sale was a turning point in the history of our club.

Ferdinand was still learning the game when he was with us - it's the opposite with Austin. He'll still score goals for us and is good to have around, but we badly need another striking option.

Fair point Strolls…players at different stages of their career so maybe my comparison is a bit off.
Again if memory serves me right, wasn’t Les’s first game our 7-1 thrashing at Sheff Wed ? I remember that game well as I think it was Paul Barron in goal who told us all to **** off when we chanted “we want 8”….

If course that call all be my mind playing tricks on me

NB just looked it up and they say it was as a sub against Cov in 1987….so could have been his second appearance??

What a wonderful day. I went with my youngest daughter ( 18 ) and we sat in our old seats behind the loft goal. The first half was frustrating as Coventry sat with eleven players behind the ball and it was difficult to break them down and find any space between the lines. Coventry tried to hit us on the break, which they did well and should've gone in at half time at least a goal to the good. Some have said that we were bad or poor first half, that maybe so going by our standards in 2021, but lets be clear here, we are not talking about Arsenal levels of poor.
Second half we started better but still didn't look like scoring, I thought it was heading for a nil nil or a late winner for them. But then Dykes came on and immediately changed the game. With just about his first touch Dykes fizzed a twenty two yarder into the bottom right hand corner right behind where we were sitting. Wonderful. After that it seemed Coventry lost their composure, their fans lost their voices and it would only be a matter of time. The KPFS was buzzing, Coventry were misplacing passes and the it was Barbet's turn to fizz a low thirty yarder towards goal. Their keeper Moore saved down low to his right, the ball fell to Austin and it somehow ( can't recall how ) the ball landed at Barbet's feet who lashed it into the roof of the net. Job done.

Hi ho silver played, the sun was shining and everyone connected to the club were singing and smiling. A good day to be an R.

Another win, regardless how ugly, is always a great thing.
Second place now.
Nothing wrong with being the bridesmaid.
