Match Preview
Buoyed by gaining four points from a possible six on the road in the last week, Rangers will be keen to make home advantage count against Jose Mourinho’s title-chasers.
It will be a difficult task, however, with the Blues heading into the weekend some seven points clear – with a game in hand – at the summit of the division.
Rangers, meanwhile, are two points adrift of Hull in 17th, with the bid to beat the drop intensifying with every twist and turn as the clock ticks down to the end of the season.
The R’s recent record against the Blues is impressive in W12 though.
Unbeaten in the last two league meetings at Loftus Road, memories of Heidar Helguson’s winner here in 2011/12 will undoubtedly come flooding back this weekend, as Rangers look to build on a fine seven days in the wake of impressive displays at West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.
The reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge in November was a keenly-contested local derby, with the Blues running out narrow victors by the odd goal in three, thanks in part to a cheating and diving ill deserved Eden Hazard penalty.
Richard Dunne’s return from an MCL knee injury is likely to provide Ramsey with a timely boost, whilst Leroy Fer is closing in on a return and could be in contention for the R’s next home fixture versus West Ham in two weeks’ time.
Yun Suk-Young is in line to return from concussion after missing Tuesday’s thriller at Villa, but Rio Ferdinand, Michael Doughty and Adel Taarabt are all out.
Diego Costa’s on-going hamstring problems will in all likelihood mean Loic Remy gets a rare start on his return to Loftus Road, whilst Mourinho is expected to opt for Gary Cahill over Kurt Zouma at the heart of the Blues back four.
Another sub-plot on Sunday is that this is the last weekend on which a tenth yellow card produces immediate suspension, and three of the eight players who are one caution away from a two-match ban (at least) are playing in this fixture: R’s skipper Joey Barton and Chelsea duo Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic.
It promises to be quite an afternoon in W12.
