OK - it doesn't look as though anyone is going to work this one out, so

1) The first Ashes test was in Brisbane
2) Mel Brisbane was Watford's first apprentice
3) His first, and only, senior goal was scored in a pre-season tour in 1963 against Irish club Distillery.

I'd say ofh was nearest to the answer, so over to him...
 
I'm going for England and Hugh Fernley-Whittlingstick ... although he reminds me more of a root vegetable than a plant ... akin to a turnip ...
 
India, at a guess, because he turned tigers into butter. I hope I've got the right story! This is from memory of hearing/reading the story as a child in South Africa. I actually thought it was a story to show how clever and inventive black children were, but I did have very liberal parents (too liberal for their own good).
 
I remember the story from primary school days, but do not recall a country being named. Maybe over the years that has been edited out to.
