First Round (1871-72): When Hitchin FC and Crystal Palace played their first-round tie on November 11, 1871, the match ended in a draw (scoreless). At that time, the rules regarding drawn matches were still developing and not strictly defined for all scenarios. The Football Association (FA) decided that both clubs should progress to the second round.
