I'll give it to you Yorkie. He arrives by steamboat. in Belgium it is always in Antwerp (in the Netherlands this changes from year to year but always departs from Rotterdam when all is over). He arrives on the first Saturday after 11th Nov. - the beginning of the carnival period, and hangs around until 6th of December. The way he travels from town to town can be variable but he always enters towns on a white horse. The tradition of this was established by Spanish seafarers and, according to tradition, he comes from Spain. Hence the Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) - dressed as they suppose Moors were dressed. Recently political correctness has turned this into sooty Pete - with it being enough to dab a bit of soot on his face, thus establishing a connection with chimneys rather than anything racial.
Over to you.
