Close enough Yorkie. The Cone and the War of the Worlds are known to have been inspired by a visit to the Potteries in 1888 (I say the Potteries because at the time the city of Stoke on Trent didn't exist). The inspiration for the cone is obvious, but the bursts of fire from the iron foundry furnaces planted the idea of interplanetary conflict in his mind and were a direct inspiration for some scenes.
