Tampa affair
From Wikipedia,
ABC news report by Margot O'Neill on the Tampa affair and its political context, October 2001.
In late August 2001, the Howard Government of Australia refused permission for the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa, carrying 433 rescued refugees (predominantly Hazaras of Afghanistan from a distressed fishing vessel in international waters) and 5 crew, to enter Australian waters.[1][2] This triggered an Australian political controversy in the lead-up to the 2001 federal election, and a diplomatic dispute between Australia and Norway.

When the Tampa entered Australian waters, the Prime Minister ordered the ship be boarded by Australian special forces. This brought censure from the government of Norway, which said the Australian government failed to meet its obligations to distressed mariners under international law at the United Nations.[3] Within a few days, the government introduced the Border Protection Bill[4] into the House of Representatives, saying it would confirm Australian sovereignty to "determine who will enter and reside in Australia". The government introduced the "Pacific Solution", whereby the asylum seekers were taken to Nauru where their refugee status was considered, rather than in Australia.
That's it - an act that saved PM John Howard's bacon. His right wing coalition government had been lagging behind Labor in the polls - the act of stopping illegal immigration struck a chord with enough voters two months later for them to retain government and condemn Australia to six more years of them.

According to some sources, the Isle of Wight was part of Hampshire until 1890 when it became a county in its own right. I am not so sure about that as I send a card there, which has a Portsmouth postcode. If I added the county surely it would have to be Hants, unless Portsmouth has been moved while I wasn't looking.
I think that's just a Post Office thing. There are addresses in Bedfordshire, just over the border, that have Hitchin in their address and Hertfordshire as part of their address, e.g. Shillington, Hitchin, Herts - although Shillington is in Bedfordshire.

The 8.6m might be the longest ever croc, shot in 1957. As for the 1.6m, was that the height of the Polish woman who shot it?

Yes - Krystyna Pawlowski, a 1.6m tall Polish immigrant, shot and killed the 8.6 metre monster on a bank of the Norman River in Queensland's Gulf Country. In a 15 year career as a crocodile hunter, she's thought to have killed and skinned around 10,000 of them - and that particular beast was the biggest ever killed in Australia. Fair play to her - I would have run a mile if I'd seen that...

Bloody monster, wasn’t it? <yikes>

Thanks, BB. :)

25 years ago tomorrow, Watford played against our dear friends from up the M1. 0-0.
At that time, Watford’s manager, assistant manager, Director of Youth Football and Youth Development Officer had all played for the Hornets. Who were they? First to name all four.

Kenny Jackett and Luther Blisset were in charge I think of the first team until GT returned. Who the other two were I cannot remember.
