I thought we were waiting for a question from Yorkie?Did Luther “come through the youth ranks”?![]()
i indicated I was happy to try this one...I thought we were waiting for a question from Yorkie?
Ok - Andy is on the right tracki indicated I was happy to try this one...
................ but couldnt find the answer!
I will do one after we get yours.....
Well, Luther wasn’t ever an apprentice. He played in a youth game, but that was his trial. He signed straight from school in 1975 for £30 a week into what we would now call the first team squad, and while he completed apprentice duties, he wasn’t one. He played a handful of games that season, initially coming on as sub. I think he misremembers his first match as a goalscorer against Swansea City on 17th April 1976. I saw him come on as sub on 3rd April 1976 against Barnsley. Luther claims he was bad in the Swansea game, fair enough, I wasn’t there, but he was electric in the Barnsley game. He was out on the wing, and was more like our Sarr than anyone else I can think of. He ran at people, beat them mainly with pace, and put the ball in. My Dad and I, as well as the rest of the crowd, were very excited by him. I remember people shouting for the other players to pass to him.Ok - Andy is on the right track
Well that means there are two mistakes - and both in the same sentence. What's the second one?Well, Luther wasn’t ever an apprentice. He played in a youth game, but that was his trial. Well, I’d always thought the Luxembourg game was his debut too, but further inspection says it was in a friendly against West Germany.I'm not sure what clue I could give without actually giving the answer away.
Maybe focus on his hat trick against Luxembourg...
It certainly was.Well, I’d always thought the Luxembourg game was his debut too, but further inspection says it was in a friendly against West Germany.
Thanks, BB.It certainly was.
Over to you.
Not sure what you mean by 'dropped colleague' - if he had been dropped he surely wouldn't need to have been substituted? Thanks, BB.
I don't know if this one has been done before, apologies if it has.
Which Watford player made his debut when he came on as a substitute for a dropped colleague?
Correct. Over to you.Pierre Issa was dropped off a stretcher, and Lloyd Doyley made his debut.
Bobby Howfield - aka the Limey in gridiron?Cheers Andy.
Which ex-Watford player earned a contract on the basis he could kick a football in a straight line?
