Pub Quiz thread

I think we should give up on this one. Cologne , you came the nearest.
The question: What links the Wolves with the Great Western Railway and the founding of Watford?
The Wolves are the American football team from Watfrord City ND. Watford City ND was named by Dr. Vaughan G. Morris who came from Watford, Ontario. Watford, Ontario was founded when the Great Western Railway was built from Niagara Falls to Windsor via Hamilton and London.
Ok. Cheers NZ. An easy one - which is the biggest town, or city, in the UK. not to have a fully professional football club ?

I would guess that it is one of the rugby league strongholds, but which one? It could also be a town like Gloucester which has a rugby team, but not FL team.

The Vicar of Wakefield?
Spot on Theo ! I guess you are suggesting that Wakefield is the answer - it is one of the 2 which I would accept. The Borough of Wakefield has a population of around 333,000 and the whole Borough has city status - placing it just ahead of Dudley (which also has no professional football). Depending on the actuall status of 'semi professional', Belfast also has no fully pro. teams, Linfield and Glentoran both being, officially, semi professional. Over to you.

Cheers Cologne...didn't know about the football but the literary clues are good for me of course! Haven't read the Oliver Goldsmith poem since school though. Funny the things you still remember 50 years on.

Which novel, also with religious connotations, was originally turned down by its publisher because he thought it "too full of vulgarity and exaggeration"?

Thanks Theo, enjoy your cruise.

Who was the first foreign player that Watford signed from a foreign club?
