The word was first used in 1834 - so can anyone before that date be described with a word which didn't exist at the time ? Presuming that the phenomenon must exist before the description of it - it could be one of the Ancient Greeks, however, all forms of mysticism would have to be absent - the first to actually qualify under the modern description may have been Galileo.
 
Just noted the 'wrong gender' clue.....so, a woman ? Caroline Herschel or Mary Somerville.....the latter having been Scottish I'll take her.

Mary Somerville it was - an amazing woman. She and Caroline Herschel were the first women to become members of the Royal Astronomical Society, made more amazing by the fact that she was largely self-taught.
