The character featured in printed media, but not books, although there were annuals.

Spot on, Dave. As I'm sure others of you did, I used to read it when I was younger. Not too sure about the artwork in the current revival in MOTD magazine: https://royoftheroversofficial.com/news/444
Also, there's one big error in the article - Melchester's local rivals were Melboro, not Tynecaster.

    Thanks Barry.

What massive error was made by pretty much the whole world less than 20 years ago?

You're on the right track cologne, but it's much simpler than the "Millenium Bug"!

A give away clue is that it is indeed to do with the millennium but nothing to do with the bug or any other computer facts.

If there are 10 green bottles hanging on a wall and you wanted to check they were all there, how would you do it

Was it the belief that the new millennium started on Jan 1 2000?

There is an island called 'Pheasant Island' which is in the river Bidasoa, close to the Bay of Biscay and San Sebastian which has alternating sovereignty between Spain and France every 6 months, according to some treaty from 1659 - so I presume 1st August must be France's turn ?
