Hang on, slow down! That is what alot of Saints fans will be saying when I mention these two lovely words? Due to our position in the league at the moment I think that it is highly likely that there is a 90% chance we will finish in the top 6. For the optimists out there, I believe they think we will have a good chance to get automatically promoted.
In my opinion, when we gained promotion from League 1 and then if someone said that we could get into the playoffs I would have bitten their arm off. I knew we had a very good squad to compete with the various teams in this league, however, not in my wildest dreams did I think we would be doing this well. Credit has to be given all the coaching staff, management and the team for this run of excellent form.
Now (finally) the point I am making is that if we believe that we have a good chance of gaining a chance of automatic promotion, who should we sign in January? Should we be aiming to get proven Premiership quality in our squad or gamble on in-form players that aren't currently proven in the top league? Or should we leave the squad.as it is because of the way we are playing at the moment.
I would love for us to make a couple of decent signings in January to bolster the squad (especially up front), however, I understand that Nigel likes to keep a harmonised squad so he clearly knows better than me considering the position we are in in the championship.
I just wondered what your opinion was fellow Saints?

Another striker is the most important thing...Barnard is just coming back from injury, Connolly is unfit and Lambert is carrying an injury. It's a long season and we could do with a quality forward. However, the harmony of the team is an important factor. Buying new players is a big call. It would be easier if we are lower down the league, Adkins could just look for a player to do a job. Any player must be Premiership quality and yet be willing to step down a league and possibly play second fiddle. Glad I only have to talk about and not actually do anything.

I can't remember who it was but someone on here was lucky enough to go to a dinner with Cortese and kind enough to share some comments afterwards. It is rumoured that we already have a "big" signing lined up for January. Who this is is of course complete speculation but I would be surprised if it wasn't a striker. Also, given the way in which we signed Jos, I would be equally surprised if there was any danger of it not happening! Obtaining a player's registration whilst "loaning" them is effectively buying them on sale or return, something that I've never seen before and shows just how cute NC is in the market.

As to whether or not we'll be bringing in a "name" that could potentially upset others on lower salaries, I think this is a non-issue. It's very clear that anyone recruited by our current regime is selected for their personal qualities as well as their footballing ones so no worries there for me.

I have no idea who we might sign or who we should sign, that's why we have scouts to do our digging. One thing we do need to prioritise is attitude. Our starting 11 is already pretty good and the last thing we need is some Billy Big Boots coming in, expecting to be the first name on the teamsheet.
