Mike Dean is by far and away the best PL referee at giving penalties for shirt tugging. On the basis that he didn't call a foul against Smalling, I'm happy in this instance to accept that he didn't see it.

How many of them against Man Utd? Did you see the game or are you auto defending the ref? It was so blatant that if he didn't see it then his positioning was ****. It was awful.

 

Tom your inability to see anything wrong with a ref is dull. It was blatant and obvious. If he didn't see it, he is either blind or positioned in the wrong place. Not brave enough to give one like that at old Trafford.

When I say ref, I include assistants.

 

It's obvious from a TV screen, where the camera angle is well above ground level. You don't know how hard it is to see shirt pulling from a corner from a referee's view. He was in the right place positionally. There are so many bodies in the box and regardless of how blatant a shirt is pulled from a replay, it still happens very quickly and it's bloody ****ing difficult for to see these things through a crowd. I am certain he would have given it had he seen it. It frustrates me so ****ing much how people think shirt pulling is an easy thing for referees to spot in a penalty area from corners. It isn't. And as for the assistant, he's miles away and is very unlikely to see it.

 

Oh please stop going on about the Old Trafford "conspiracy theory". The whole thing's ridiculous.

 

I can see it from the stands from the other end of the ground at times.

I don't think they look for it.

 

You've got an elevated view which helps. A referee cannot see over the players where you can.

What is also extremely annoying is that the referees continually don't see it don't give these decisions. One would think that if they are not seen a few times and it is highlighted that a decent ref may start looking for them.

The referees today are not good enough. Most of them aren't fit enough to keep up with the modern game.

 

You are more blinded as it's about a referee than most bias fans are about their team.

You always have an excuse for a referee. Always. The refs aren't good enough.

What about the assistants position at a corner? Hardly any players in the way.

 

Bollocks. I've criticised referee's quite a lot this season, and I'm not saying Dean didn't get it wrong today but it's easy to why he got it wrong. It's not the referee's fault that FIFA are extremely reluctant to bring in technology.

 

Well bloody hell, if only you said that in your first post rather than belligerently defending them, this would have been over posts back.

 

Just watching the Newcastle goal against QPR - even that was jammy, he kicks it against his left foot which lifts it over the goalie.

 

It was hinted at in the commentary, although it was easy to see on replay.

Whilst watching the higlights of the ManU Arsenal game it once again struck me how good goals by glamour teams are over-hyped in the commentary whereas if non-glamour clubs do the same to a glamour club then the emphasis is on on any slight error the glamour club players made leading to a goal.

The example which set off my train of thought was Herrara's goal. Yes, it required skill, but the commentator impressed upon us that it was a very difficult thing to do. Well really? I didn't know that..! How about the poor marking? Which would have undoubtedly been pointed out if the defence hadn't been a top 4 one. An avoidable goal and not especially brilliant in my opinion.

Jammy? You try that LTL. That's an incredible piece of skill that deceived everybody watching. You can see from the triple somersault afterwards that he was delighted that this audacious bit of skill actually worked.
