If pop punk exists then it was invented by the Ramones.
Catchy songs with melodies reminiscent of The Beach Boys, '60s girl groups and bubblegum pop played in a punk style with fast guitars and drums.
The Undertones and Buzzcocks (both influenced by the Ramones) were the best exponents here, but the likes of The Damned, S.L.F, Generation X had their pop punk moments too.
The Descendents carried on the style in the '80s, but were not too poppy.
There was then a real explosion of pop punk in the U.S in the '90s. MTV latched on to middle of the road, faux punk bands like Green Day and Blink 182. The real talents like The Queers, The Lillingtons, Huntingtons and others didn't get any exposure and therefore no commercial success.
This is real pop punk

The original bands that pioneered Pop Punk and Power Pop were great and combining fast guitars with 60s melodies has produced some joyous music since the 70s, even the band in my avatar, Hüsker Dü, played a heavy Hardcore kind of Pop Punk and were influenced by Ramones. I think that problem with the genre started around the the start of the millennium when it morphed into a kind of insipid, generic Skate Punk and Emo sound which basically is all the same.
Pop Punk bands that I like include...
Ramones
Buzzcocks
The Undertones
Generation X
Descendents
Social Distortion
The Lemonheads
Shonen Knife
The Lillingtons (who Spurs Luke got me into, he could probably name hundreds of bands from the genre!)
Have you ****s forgotten about probably the best punk band of the 70s / 80s?
The Stranglers?
****ing Green Day? I've farted better tunes than they've done. And don't get me started on **** like Good Charlotte and Bowing for ****ing Soup.
Avril doesn't get in my pop punk listProblem with 'pop punk' you have to put Avril Lavigne in there and whilst she is a wud, that would have to be accompanied by 'shhhh no talking.... and definitely no singing'
