A couple dozen Republican lawmakers (and counting) have rescinded their endorsements of him since last night. Several have called for him to drop out. That's not courage on their part...it's because he was in trouble before, and they know that he is practically unelectable now.
It's very odd to think that after everything he's said and done before this, that this would be the death blow.
I'm not condoning his actions by any stretch but I mean, what's the worst? He gropes women at a healthy rate of 2 per day. That's still less than 10,000 women being touched offensively. How many Muslims in the country would he ban? Or you know, dude could kill every single person in the entire world.
Nonetheless, I have to think you are right. It's not that I think Trump supporters are too offended by what he did. It's that after the past two weeks they realize they are backing a sinking ship. And one that is incapable of producing the impact they hope because no one in government is going to back him.
It was never so much that Trump inspired the group that supports him. It was rather that they chose him, partly because he was an outsider, partly because there was no one else, and partly because they knew he was like this and thus was useful as the biggest, fattest middle finger they could find. But he's always been the tool and not the leader. And they can find someone other human meme to support and/or ****vote.
Which is really what's scary. Trump losing is a relief in a lot of ways. But it still doesn't change the mood of the country. It's not over just because he loses. I don't think it will be over for some time. The older, white, non-college educated male is not ever coming back to the mainstream.
Yeah, there should have been many deathblows previous, but this happens to check all the boxes. His position in the polls, and the timing (it's too late in the game to play the "ignore it and it will go away" card that worked so well a few months ago), but also the realization that this isn't going to be the end of it. That Trump has been accused of sexual assault on multiple occasions is not a secret, but that has remained in the background. It won't be anymore.
Beyond that, it happens to hurt them with the one demographic they needed to turn out: middle class, Republican-leaning white women. That he still had a decent share of that demographic is shocking, but you'd have to think that this will make a dent, and any dent at this point is fatal. Every other group either loved him or hated him already...he has nowhere left to turn in search of votes, and the GOP hierarchy knows it.
Among the topics Trump discussed: his daughter Ivanka's physique, having sex with women on their menstrual cycles, threesomes, and checking out of a relationship with women after they turn 35.

I very much hear what you say. We've already our personal WTF moment in voting this year, and I wouldn't put it beyond Americans to vote this man in. I just hope they have more sense across the pond than we did, and DON'T DO IT. My confidence isn't high though.
Bit of a mixed bag.
Trump will lose. But it won't be because Americans have sense; you are correct to have no faith in us.
He will lose for the most cynical and depressing reasons possible. He managed to annoy white people who did not care what he did to Mexican, Muslims, or anyone else, but draw a strong and indignant line in the sand when a much lesser offense is committed against them.
He was ultimately unable to persuade a group of idiotic selfish assholes that he could adequately represent their interests (that interest beginning and ending with themselves) and not for the morally repugnant person that he is.
Still, looks like the US is about to dodge a bullet - meanwhile the UK electorate has aimed one right between it's own eyes and pulled the trigger.

Pretty much, and that has been the scary thing about the past few years. Everyone knew that Rob Ford was a complete trainwreck before he was elected mayor of Toronto...he had a history of public alcohol abuse, police had been called to his home on suspicion of making threats against his wife, he'd made racist comments, etc. But he kinda sorta held it together in his campaign at least enough that the idiotic, selfish assholes who comprised his base stuck by him. Luckily, mayors are far less consequential than national leaders

Debate tonight could be interesting. I don't think there's anything left for Trump to do but go scorched Earth. He has no chance of reeling in the moderates now, so no reason to temper his message. He can only try and get out the "deplorables" vote and hope that is enough. Honestly at this point, I'd just go up, regardless of question, and just say everything I always wanted to about Clinton, Rosie O'Donnell, Alex Rodriguez, anyone whoever wronged me, bitches, Obama conspiracies, who'd I'd like to have sex with. Just let out all out, and then just walk out, middle fingers raised.

I pretty much agree. He has to go after the whole establishment thing and how Hillary is part and parcel of it as well as hammer on the e-mails. His effort last time at trying not to be too aggressive can;t be used anymore. He has to make her out to be the death knell for normal people.
I still wouldn't write off his chances although what has come out this week has made is now seem unlikely. It does surprise me how Hillary's treatment of those that her hubbie was guilty of doing things with is not spoken of as much.
Trump would actually not be doing too bad tonight if he didn't constantly whine and complain about the moderators. They're actually doing you favor by shutting you up, dude. It's forcing you to stay on message.
Trump's best answer tonight was when he was asked to compliment Hillary Clinton. That's right. He was at his best when asked to be diplomatic. On top of that, his compliment was that she "never gives up." After months of calling her low energy. Mind blown.
You're missing the point of that though. People that will vote for Trump will most likely be very suspicious of the media as being biased and him complaining about them just re-inforces that belief to them. Funny because he moans about Hillary going over and he should be allowed that extra time and then goes into a 5 minute rant.
Trouble last night was Hillary was again beaming at Trump while he was criticising her and he got a lot of really good digs in at her. Loved it when he said "you'd be in Jail." Was comedy value.
She just carried on with the same old political words that we have heard both sides of the pond for a couple of decades with the reverse actually happening.
I think Trump is past winning it now even though last night he was much better.
What should make most people worry is that if Farage was the candidate he would already have beaten Clinton and if Trump was over here he wouldn't have even got a chance in the first place. Unless a leader of a party gave them a free pass to the top house then it keeps people out of the HoC. About time Lords were not given jobs in the state IF they have not been elected too...........Shami.

People who will vote for Trump are suspicious of EVERYTHING. The time he wasted complaining about the moderators could have been used to call Clinton a murderer,or Obama a secret Muslim, or 9/11 a conspiracy. Or he could have even made a more organized attack on the "mainstream media," instead of a personal complaint. Even for Trump supporters, maybe particularly for Trump supporters, there are bigger issues facing this country than Trump not getting 5 extra seconds on a debate question.
As for Trump getting close to being elected, part of that is because the far right wing gaining political momentum is still a relatively new phenomenon. People like Trump or Palin are the only game in town. Give the far right another 10 or 15 years to hone their skills and they will be trotting out UKIP-esque slicksters as well.
It's not that UK voters are any more stupid than US voters. It's just a different system where it's easier for a minority party to get a toehold based on single issues.

A big part of the problem, on both sides of the Atlantic, is a compliant media who long ago gave up trying to distinguish between fact and fiction so long as the characters are outlandish enough to sell the story.
The Greens in the UK, or Bernie Saunders over there, would have died for the sort of coverage Trump and Farage have had.
I thought you would be busy celebrating today's ICM polls that puts the Tories 17 points ahead of Labour. If that poll equated to current seats it would mean circa 439 Tory seats.............21 more than Blair's landslide. Happy days.
