Quite shocked by the developments today concerning Trump’s pursuit of Greenland. It is not often that I agree with Sir Ed Davies but he is correct insofar that the US now poses a threat to Europe. They are now as much a menace as Russia and China.

I am far from convinced that the retention of Greenland is a security matter for the US. It is purely about the acquisition of Greenland's mineral wealth. There is a similar issue with Venezuela and their oil reserves.

I am sickened by the actions of the US. They are not an ally. We must stand up in solidarity to support of the peoples of Greenland and Venezuela.

You left out the Ukrainian mineral wealth and deals done with America.
Also reported elsewhere are discussions between US and Russia regarding post war exploitation of what may be annexed territory.

Quite simply Ian, yes they are. As for Venezuela, I wouldn't be too quick to stand up for them given how they have treated Maria Corina Machado.

Oddly enough, it had crossed my mind how American action against Venezuela would work out for Machado. I think she will need to keep schtum otherwise she will appear to be the villain if she sides with Trump. Just think that American involvement will marginise her and we end up in a perverse situation where global sympathy will switch to Maduro. My guess is the Machado will be made an irrelevance following any military action from Trump.

I do find it odd learning just how large the shadow Fleet is. Not sure Trump’s action will work and can see a situation where the Chinese navy could escort these tankers. The Chinese navy is reputedly already too large for the Americans to confront.

No, no, no, Brexit has been brilliant for Britain, as now we can....er....control our borders? Umm, we have free trade with...oooh....someone, I'm sure. And besides, we no longer have to speak French, Spanish, Italian or German, and we can drive on the left again.

Then there's the new friends you make whilst queuing for passport control and immigration.

GIANNI Infantino's decision to award a phoney peace prize to Donald Trump was far from the first time he has fêted a strongman leader.
The Fifa president maintains a close bond with Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, whose country hosted the World Cup in 2022. Throughout the tournament, Infantino stood up for Qatar amid fierce criticism over its treatment of migrant workers and outlawing of same-sex relationships.

Now Infantino's friend Qatar has reached its first World Cup on foreign soil. The emir's team was a beneficiary of recent format and qualifying changes to the tournament.

Home comforts
At the behest of Infantino, the 2026 World Cup has been expanded from 32 to 48 teams, and that change doubled the number of Asian teams directly qualifying, from four to eight.

This Labour government is a complete shambles. The Prime Minister, The Foreign Secretary and The Deputy Prime Minister/Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor have, in their haste to appease their left wingers and Muslim voters, made a guy with terrorist ideals welcome in this country. Did no-one investigate his past, did no-one check his posting history? Labour are a dangerous bunch of incompetents.

Apparently the Tories attempted something similar when they were in power, but they were even more incompetent and couldn't manage it. Feel free to defend this bunch of cretins by saying the Tories weren't any better because you would be right. There's no suggestion that Brexit was to blame at this stage.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wrote on X that he was delighted, saying Alaa Abdel Fattah's case had been a top priority for the government.

He qualifies as a British citizen through his mother. Most of his political activity has been associated with Egypt but he has received support from the UN for questioning the human rights record of his home country. It is a wierd priority given the situation of British citizens in Iran....as reported in Private Eye.

A dual national can be deported or have their citizenship revoked, especially if they aren't a citizen by birth in that country, but it's typically for serious reasons like national security threats, terrorism, fraud in obtaining citizenship, or serious crimes, not just for having dual nationality itself. While dual citizenship offers some protection, it doesn't provide immunity from laws, and countries can strip citizenship (e.g., UK can remove citizenship if conducive to public good for naturalized citizens) or deport individuals who pose risks, allowing them to return to their other country.

Of course but you have neglected to comment that the UN was also pushing for his release.

The tweets are not really helpful but i so not know the context. On the face of things you have raised some salient points but most comments on Twitter are nonsence. Indeed, your opening paragraphs in the initial post are not really that different and are pretty reactionary too. The quotes you have posted raise some worrying issues albeit you have neglected to mention anything to do with either position regarding Egyptian politics. I am guessing that you were supportive of the whole Arab Sprng movement ?

Not sure of UK Govt position on Egyptian politics or whether we should be involved.

Looks like they have caotured Maduro too. It is amazing how surgical this operation appears to have been. I will be interested to see if there will be any repercussions and how quickly America will steal the oil from Venezuela. I can see Europe being nervous about the future of Greenland after this. There needs to be a statement from UN condemning this action. I would agree that Maduro has squandered the kegacy of Hugo Chavez but the American action puts Trump in a position where criticism of Putin will now feel very hypocritical.

Basically green-light for China to do what the hell it wants with Taiwan too.

It’s how wars start…
