Removing the VAT exemption on private school fees was always Labour policy, so bringing it forward from the intended start date, if that’s what’s happened, shouldn’t really come as a shock to anyone.

I had a Quick Look and can’t find it, it may now be behind a paywall on the Times and I don’t subscribe. But I seem to recall reading it the week prior to the GE, I immediately text my wife to tell her about it.

Hi All,
Last night, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves told executives at The Times CEO Summit that Labour would delay school fee VAT until September 2025, at the earliest. Labour insiders added that Ms Reeves would seek advice from government officials if she becomes Chancellor, before setting a final date.

No it was their choice to slash public spending while protecting the wealthy. Austerity was a choice.

Terms like Tory fanboys don’t add any substance or weight to your point, it makes you come across as bitter and a little silly imo. Which isnt necessary as you are clearly and obviously a very smart guy.

I didn’t want Labour, didn’t really want Tories, but I don’t want Labour to fail, as that would mean things going more to ****.

So, does that make me one of your pitiful Tory fanboys? Not sure what world you live in, most people don’t really give a **** like you seem to.

We have to get on with it, no matter who is in power.

I said years ago I was fuming with Labour around the Brexit arguing, and hoped they would support the incumbent government to get the best deal for the country, and not score political points. It really was futile not supporting, in that it was bloody obvious they would be in power and inherit any deal they made hard to get.

And I agree lots of Tory infighting didn’t help, but just for once, for the sake of the country, everyone could have acted like adults to find the best solutions.

Anyhow, Tory Fanboy - hilarious <laugh>

Yeah, absolute win double that. Not like they had any choice though.

The difference between them and the Tories is, I believe Keir Starmer when he says he intends to govern on behalf of nurses, teachers, public sector workers, and all working people; the Tories have no interest in doing any of that, as their ongoing war against all Trade Unions illustrates clearly.

Time will tell if I’m being naive

Just like they were always clear about what taxes they wouldn’t raise but never ever said they wouldn’t raise ANY taxes. Despite what right wingers including some of them on here seem to insist. Anyone who believes Labour promised not to raise any taxes at all is someone who is either a bad faith actor or someone who likely intentionally chose not to read their manifesto or read any reporting about it from anywhere other than a very right wing source. And it’s a waste of time engaging with such people as you’d get more fruitful results talking to brick wall

In timely fashion - Just going back to Rest is History podcast after a bit of a break. Episode on Henry IV and the hosts are making a joke about how “people believe he promised no more tax rises” and saying “oh this is always the way with incoming prime minsters”

Not that it matters but I don’t peg the hosts as lefty hosts. They make occasional appearances on some of the shows that are part of the right wing “oh but we are really just centrists” interview grift circuit and advertise “UnHerd” magazine (and write for it i think) - which also hosts various loons as well as some sensible people

I’ve long suspected Os can’t read. Or simply had very stubborn blind spots for things he doesn’t like

It can be easily done as I missed something completely in a bbc article about Ramsdale earlier. But I wasn’t trying to grandstand and vomit up a bunch of lies and nonsense
 
I will put this here because it is politically relevant, as a result of Brexit.
The EES and ETIAS systems will be fully operational by next year (November).
Worth noting, from the comments, that these schemes were in process and agreed by the UK, prior to leaving the EU and they are not a punishment for the country’s action, as many would have us believe.

This is quite a statement by a respected political biographer.
The quote from Kwarteng is telling, although it could be his way of stirring the pot having been sacked as chancellor.


Liz Truss and her team allegedly looked at stopping cancer treatment on the NHS amid the chaotic fallout of her mini-Budget.

The shocking claim comes in a new book examining her haywire 49 days in No10.

She was forced to resign as Prime Minister in the autumn of 2022 after her unfunded tax cuts triggered an economic crisis, hitting mortgages.

In political biographer Sir Anthony Seldon’s book, How Not to Be a Prime Minister, it is claimed Ms Truss met with her then-Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to discuss the aftermath and attempt to restore market confidence.

In extracts published in The Independent, it is claimed one of her senior advisers was told at the time “that Truss and Kwarteng were thinking they could still sort out the black hole with severe cuts”. “We’ve been told that they are looking at stopping cancer treatment on the NHS,” it adds.

The aide is said to have asked in response “is she being serious?” while others said she had “lost the plot”.

They told Sir Anthony: “She’s shouting at everyone that ‘We’ve got to find the money’.

“When we tell her it can’t be done, she shouts back: ‘It’s not true. The money is there. You go and find it.”

Mr Kwarteng, who was sacked as Chancellor just days before Ms Truss resigned as PM, said: “I wasn’t involved in any conversations about restricting healthcare, but that doesn’t mean the Prime Minister and her team didn’t discuss this.”

The book is out tomorrow. Ms Truss did not comment.
