On the subject of pointing out the glaringly obvious that seems to be conveniently ignored by the gang. Corbyn has been supported in his "peace mission" by non other than current Labour MP John McDonnell,

Quote;

"It's about time we started honouring those people involved in the armed struggle. It was the bombs and bullets and sacrifice made by the likes of Bobby Sands that brought Britain to the negotiating table. The peace we have now is due to the action of the IRA."

In his study at Hayes, McDonnell has a plaque presented to him by Gerry Kelly* dedicated to the "H-Block Martyrs 1981", referring to those who died during the 1981 Irish hunger strike.

And that "great parliamentarian" ,mathematician and shoe fashionista, Diane Abbott,

Add that to a couple of dodgy racist comments and regular race baiting (oh the irony after last week's outrage) and you have a possible answer to Thumbwood's question about why she gets criticised more than other MP's.

The Tories have proven to be incapable in government but Labour are a mess of antisemitism, pro terrorist, politically correct ditherers. There's every chance this country will go from one type of long term incompetence under the Tories to an up-to-date version of incompetence from Labour. But hopefully without the same level of corruption.

You're presenting a fairly simplistic idea of "IRA bad, Brits good" there. Which isn't entirely true. Do have a read of Operation Chiffon.

Corbyn wasn't meeting the IRA on behalf of the government or else he would have met with loyalists as well. Do you know how many times he met the loyalists in that period? Zero.
I can't remember the exact figures of how many times he met terrorists Martin McGuiness and Gerry Adams but it was around 70.

I don’t remember anyone saying Corbyn had anything to do with solving the troubles? In my memory he is just someone who would rather talk and understand than simply condemn people and go with violence. That is a good thing, surely?

I agree he could never have been Prime Minister, but that doesn’t mean having principles is a bad thing. He isn’t a pacifist for one side only!

I can't agree with that analysis Laces, nowhere have I said that the government or, and it pains me to say this, the army were blameless purely because I was concentrating on the comment about Corbyn paving the way to peace.
I certainly wasn't giving an opinion on the history of the troubles but I detest the IRA because of what they did to innocent people in NI and the mainland. Corbyn called Hamas and Hezbollah his friends, his relationship with the IRA was one of friendship too. To keep this so called peace story going is contemptable.

Giving links has proven to be a waste of time on here because most posters have already made up their minds to reject everything or try to discredit the source etc. certainly not to engage in a polite conversation. That boat sailed a long time ago whenever an opposing view was aired. Now it is all about point scoring and I don't deny to being part of that myself, I'm not interested anymore in hearing other posters point of view because they don't tolerate other points of view themselves. The mods did little to control name calling and insults from fellow left wingers, so the pile on was unregulated. This is why the politics thread is in the state it is; a regular slanging match. This is not the case on any other thread and this Saints board would be far better off without a politics thread but regardless, while it is here I will continue to post.
Having said all that, I don't believe you are one of the usual suspects so below is a link from a labour party member from some time back. While he doesn't say much about who was saying it, he more or less accepts that Corbyn and his fans were using that excuse when accused of treachery (my words).

In interviews long ago Corbyn has insisted credit should be given to all unionists and republicans who helped deliver peace

He acknowledged meeting former prisoners, although said they told him they were not in the IRA, adding such talks were on the basis of trying to develop a peace process

He has also said: "I have not spoken to the IRA. I have in the past and still do often meet people from Sinn Fein”

I never felt he particularly ‘paved the way’ to peace, however he was openly talking to republicans whilst the government said they weren’t and actually probably were

There was never going to be a peaceful solution without talking

Jeremy Corbyn previously explained why he described Hamas and Hezbollah as “friends” during a parliamentary meeting on the Middle East

He said he used the term in a "collective way" but insisted he does not agree with what either organisation does

"There is not going to be a peace process unless there is talks involving Israel, Hezbollah and Hamas and I think everyone knows that”

I’m not a real Corbynite but like to think I’m aware of his strengths and weaknesses and understand the vested interests in his vilification by some areas of the media

No "probably" to it. They were. They just weren't shouting about it for any number of reasons (largely because to do so would have completely imploded the process itself).

The quote you use about not speaking to the IRA but to Sinn Fein is...well...a little bit weak, if not downright weasel words.

No doubt during the troubles there were a number of ongoing back channel discussions. As previously posted Peter Taylor's documentaries and book operation chiffon are an excellent watch and read. I'd rather spend my time on those rather than a discussion about the demonisation of jeremy corbyn.

I expect they will roll out the go to excuse of “He needs to utilise his time effectively”, which wouldn’t be a bad thing if he was actually doing some good.

Says something about his agenda and time management that he's making the trip by helicopter for the short speech.he made. Modern communications make the excuse irrelevant.
