In a relatively small poll (1500) 27% didn’t know about the new law to provide ID at a polling station, in order to vote.
This change in law is likely to win the Tories more seats, in the next general election, than any of their policies will because still it hasn’t filtered down to everyone.
Hopefully the local elections in May will act as a less harmful opportunity for voters to learn about this change, so that they are prepared for the big one when it comes.
All of the opposition parties need to be pushing for a national campaign on this in the MSM and social media as well as a leaflet drop to educate the public, before it is too late.

A political journalist has also picked up the point about voter ID, and eligible voters missing from the electoral register, with some eye watering figures.

AS many as 9.4 million people – 17% of eligible adults – are missing from the electoral register or not listed at their current address so may not be able to vote.

And what is the Government doing to fill this hole in our democracy?

Little to nothing.

Is it providing extra emergency funds to local authorities to sign them all up, and modernising the law by giving officials access to other data such as counciltax bills to enrol voters automatically? No.

Of course they aren’t, when the 42% of private renters the Electoral Commission believes are adrift are far less likely to vote Tory than the 9% of absent homeowners.

The same applies to the 29% of missing people aged 18-34 compared with only 6% of those aged 65 and over. MPs on the Levelling Up Committee investigating registration are buried in evidence on the mendacity of levelling down democracy.

What at the very least smacks of Tory indifference mutates into naked self-interest when approved photo ID will be demanded at polling booths in Britain for general elections and, from May 4, England’s council contests. This is a supposed answer to a phantom problem, as the Electoral Commission again found no evidence of systemic fraud.

Indeed, the number of Tory MPs convicted of sex offences is greater than conviction for voter fraud in recent times.

Turnout will be depressed and voters without the correct document turned away, as happened in trials.

And again the Tories calculate they will gain, or they wouldn’t erect the hurdle.

The young, poor, people of colour and disabled – all more likely to vote Labour, less likely to be Tories – will be disproportionately blocked.

It’s called gerrymandering; rigging elections in a party’s favour.

The Tories are plotting to steal the general election, hijacking British democracy. Unless they’re stopped.

Labour should be continually shouting from the rooftops, instead of occasionally expressing concern.

This is possibly too late in the day, but it should not be beyond the capabilities of local authorities, as administrators of elections, to include information/a reminder about the need for photo ID on the polling cards sent out for each election. This should give a greater than average chance of people noticing. No guarantee of success, but it might help.

What needs to change also is the type of photographic ID that is acceptable.
Students 18+ and living in London can apply for an Oyster card, complete with photo for identification purposes, for cheaper travel.
This type of ID is not listed as acceptable on the government website, yet a 60+ Oyster card is, as are bus passes for the elderly.
I haven’t been able to work out if student ID cards are listed as acceptable, but if they aren’t it should be fairly easy to change this.
It’s the obvious attempt to disenfranchise young people who are more likely NOT to vote for the Tories, whilst making it easier for the older generations, who ARE more likely to vote for the Tories, that just marks this whole episode as being gerrymandering.

Another school shooting in America, this one made more shocking by the fact that the shooter was in her teens. 3 children and 3 adults killed. :(

Edit: Updated info is that the shooter was 28. Still, you don't expect a 28 year old woman to engage in a mass shooting.

Ease of access to high-powered weaponry has a democratizing effect: no matter your race, gender, or creed, you too have access to the tools to murder a whole bunch of people in a senseless gout of violence. That's the American way.

28 year old trans “woman”.

Turns out the woke mind virus is harmful to society. Who could possibly have seen this coming?

Yes but my point was it is very rarely a woman who commits this sort of crime. Before I read the news story it didn't occur to me a woman could have done it because it very rarely is.

It wasn’t a woman. It was a trans woman murdering innocent Christian children.

Like I’ve said in here many times, the extreme woke left are just as evil as the extreme right. But a few on here pretended that “woke” culture wasn’t a real issue.

Well here ya go.

It was biologically a woman who identifies as a man (I think - that's what I read anyhow? May be wrong).

Cool, so let's take guns out of everyone's hands.

Also, it's not exactly equal, no:

https://www.adl.org/resources/report/murder-and-extremism-united-states-2022

  • The issue of extremist-related mass killings is of growing concern and is the subject of a special section of this report. From the 1970s through the 2000s, domestic extremist-related mass killings were relatively uncommon. However, over the past 12 years, their number has greatly increased. Most of these mass killings were committed by right-wing extremists, but left-wing and domestic Islamist extremists were also responsible for incidents. The Center on Extremism has identified 62 extremist-connected mass killing incidents since 1970, with 46 of them being ideologically motivated. Disturbingly, more than half (26, or 57%) of the ideological mass killings have occurred within the past 12 years. Of particular concern in recent years are shootings inspired by white supremacist “accelerationist” propaganda urging such attacks.
  • White supremacists commit the greatest number of domestic extremist-related murders in most years, but in 2022 the percentage was unusually high: 21 of the 25 murders were linked to white supremacists. Again, this is primarily due to mass shootings. Only one of the murders was committed by a right-wing anti-government extremist—the lowest number since 2017.

So all trans people are "woke left"? Your post, given the loss of life, trying to prove a point is ****ing low.

My partner was pushing at one point to look in to a move to the US as she could get paid significantly more there as a nurse.

This is case in point why it would never be an option for me, who would want to live in a reality where you send your children off to school every morning knowing there is far too high a chance they will be murdered.

A country that has shown time and time again it doesn't care about little children being murdered to protect muh gun rights.

It is only going to get worse unfortunately.

I'm not religious, but if there is something after I hope that each member of the gun lobby and their associated politicians get to suffer appropriately for the rest of eternity, utter inhuman scum.

Two assault rifles and a hand gun. Not the type of weapons you'd expect a woman to carry.

The person in question was born female, if you're trying to make some sort of big scary transwoman comment here.

Assault rifles are also very light. A fully-equipped AR-15 is about 6.5 lbs. Two assault rifles and a handgun weigh maybe 15 lbs, total.
