Re all the above re the selection process and to a lesser extent the brexit chaos. The view amongst our diverse group of friends and acquaintances is "what the **** are they all mad"? Fortunately most know brexit was " won" by a narrow majority, unacceptably small in most democracies.

As for Truss and Co people are wondering if they're a Monty Python sketch. Several Anglophiles are genuinely sad.

You may indeed be right, candidates for leadership of the Tory Party and Prime Minister were lauded for standing up for women by planning to marginalise trans people.

Meanwhile the government was quietly dropping supporting women's reproductive rights from a communique. That's the part of this I consider to be important. You know, the bit where the government took a deliberate decision and acted to remove support for women's reproductive rights from an important communique. That bit. That's the part that bothers me. The bit where the government acted to reduce the importance they give to women's rights.

However, I have seen that Penny Mordaunt is seen as being popular with paid up Tory members, so whichever of Truss or Mordaunt is put forwards (always assuming that Sunak is a 'shoo-in'), the party faithful are likely to select someone other than Rishi, who appears to be the MPs' preferred candidate, to judge by the numbers voting for him. Is it time to get the popcorn and settle back to watch unseemly in-fighting, back-stabbing, etc?

Look, as said before, I do have a vote in this process so will no doubt receive the vitriol already offered to the remaining candidates, who knows. I'm not happy with the process and have made my views on this known to the local MP and others who need to know. Personally I would have liked to have seen Kemi Badenoch get through at least to the final pairing, but that option has gone. So reluctantly thinking of Liz Truss more that Penny Mordaunt, based on the groundwork they have both covered so far. As far as the membership goes, it's a tough call to predict that and I would treat any opinion that favours one or the other by a wide margin as very suspicious.

I agree with many, our choice is not that rich a seam, but then with rare exceptions most political party leadership elections offer a great deal of tedium and many opportunities for back stabbing, Milliband Brothers, come to mind, Lib-Dems with Charles Kennedy? We've had plenty, HeathThatcher etc etc.
What I would add is that anyone brave enough to stand for any political office or post, has my respect, if not support.

So at least pop-corn might just be a good antidote!

It's not so much a comic opera more an Ealing comedy. The vitriol is deserved by those that are and have been part of the flawed, certainty not done, brexit and the lying deceitful government under Johnson. It's been a shameful descent from a position of respect and influence. Popcorn indeed.

If it is Truss who wins (oh, what pain that sentence causes in my guts) then there's every chance she won't turn up for PMQs . I believe that she's not given a single interview since she stood for the job. She's a startled rabbit, amazed to find herself in the headlights.

Whatever shade of the political spectrum you inhabit, it would seem that the only winners in this leadership contest will be the opposition parties. Labour, the SNP and the Liberal Democrats (remember them?) are probably laughing their respective socks off, at the prospect of Truss or Mordaunt attempting to justify Conservative policies, with any sort of eloquence. If Rishi wins, he may be able to hold his own in a debate, but he may not have the unqualified backing of most Conservatives. Still, it takes your mind off the football!

I agree. Unfortunately two years is plenty of time to do a great deal of damage.

She being P.M. is the best chance we'll have of the tories not winning in two years time.
It's just hoping she doesn't start WW3 by mistake before then really.

Will the next PM be referred to by his first or surname? In my lifetime, the media usually referred to the PM by the surname. Wilson, Heath, Callaghan, Thatcher/Maggie. Major., Blair, Brown, Cameron, May until we arrived with Boris. . Liz would sound awful so I would just stick to Truss. Perhaps it will be both Rishi and Sunak with the plenty of word play on both when appropriate.. "Dishy Rishi, our new PM. If it is Truss after a mauling at PMQ's ihe headline could be "Busted Truss"
