Election date in fixed in the Constitution; it cannot be changed.

On replacing him, that's really uncharted waters as far as the presidential race goes. We're not only close to the election: voting has already begun. Tens of millions of absentee ballots have been delivered to voters, and I believe something around 1m have already been officially received. We're already past the deadline for candidates to be listed on the ballot in most/all states.

Per Rick Hasen (who knows this stuff), the most likely scenario if Trump dies is that the election goes ahead with Zombie Donald Trump on the ballot. It's too late to do anything else. This has happened in other races: former US Attorney General John Ashcroft infamously lost his Senate seat to a guy who'd been dead for three weeks. What happens after that point could theoretically get really weird, though:

In short, it could potentially give the GOP an in to do something that Trump has mused about: using state legislatures to do an end-around on the way states award their Electoral College votes (which is usually by, y'know, giving them to the candidate who gets the most votes). They could argue that the presence of Zombie Trump means that the actual vote does not reflect the will of the people, and attempt to choose a slate of electors that would back Mike Pence. That's not incredibly likely, but it is a possibility if the election is close enough; it'd be the functional end of American democracy though, so I'd rather that not come to pass.

Everything is going to be messy now though. Biden was winning fairly comfortably, and the race has been the most stable (by polling) since polling became a regular feature of American political life. Now if Biden wins, there will be cries that he has done so only because Trump got the virus. I'd have much preferred that Trump fell ill the day after the election.

I’d be careful with assumption such as “Biden was winning fairly comfortably” - remember Hilary was on the run up to the last election. Then “something” happened .... :emoticon-0114-dull::emoticon-0114-dull:

I’m still hoping Supreme Court nominee shows up on the list so we can delay that decision.

She won't show up on the list, because apparently she already had it. However, the (now three) members of the Judiciary Committee who have it cannot advance her nomination until they recover. Which makes their insistence on pretending that COVID isn't a thing all the more insane: the one thing they want the most might be sabotaged because they insisted on spiking the football in the most reckless way possible.

Also, the chair of the Judiciary Committee? He's 87 years old. And currently refusing to be tested. That they blatantly disregard the well-being of others isn't surprising. The extent to which they disregard their own well-being is another matter. A former Republican presidential candidate has already died from going to a Trump rally without a mask. Multiple high-risk people, including Trump himself, have now tested positive. I really didn't see the party turning into a straight-up death cult.

Seems like a **** show brewing with Trump and timelines. May have been positive from Wednesday and knows and took in a rally etc.

Also sources say his vitals are worrying.

They are definitely not telling the whole story, but what should we expect!

Mark Meadows (Trump's Chief of Staff) has now confirmed that Trump was receiving supplemental oxygen yesterday morning, because his vitals dropped.

In true Trump White House fashion, Meadows did this "off the record", in full view of other journalists.

If he dies, presumably his base will be hanging round the tomb for three days.

So, about that...they're bringing food to the hospital. As a sort of tribute. McDonalds and cheap chain pizza.

That is not satire. That's a MAGA-loving alt-righter with 1m followers. Imagine that you're the most powerful person on the planet, and when your fanbase wants to do something to show their love, it's bringing absolute garbage food to you while you're in hospital in large part because you're morbidly obese as your diet consists of **** a raccoon would turn away.

Pity the poor satirists; the world’s gone well beyond satire now.

I'm actually a bit concerned that the ****er will croak, because he'll gain some kind of martyr status...could cause more damage dead than alive

I don’t think the US Constitution will allow him to remain President if he’s actually dead.

The people who voted for him probably are scarier than he is anyway, and they’re not going away. Poor America. We can’t really be smug though; we’ve got Boris and Brexit to worry about.

It's the people who support him that worry me. Trump being dead won't stop them acting in his name.

Rough old time for us all politically, but I think the US will see more violence in the coming months and years whether Trump survives or not.
