‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the nation,
There was misery, poverty and great deprivation
Some stockings were empty, some fridges were bare,
The heating turned off, little money to spare.

Boris Johnson was cosy, a-quaffing champagne,
Cognac and Port so he’s feeling no pain,
Stuffing his chops on goose flesh and gammon,
Caviar, Stilton and the finest smoked salmon.

The homeless are shivering in cardboard containers
Ex-Servicemen, youngsters, both Leave and Remainers
The nurses and doctors all still searching for beds
With a shortage of staff, of money and meds

The Mogg’s singing carols with moguls and bankers,
Hedge funders, financiers and various w*nkers
Admiring his baubles and pulling his crackers,
Rejoicing that he's got us all by the knackers.

Your Gran’s in the corridor, still on the trolley
While the Chancellor’s counting the last of his lolly
And Grandad’s in pieces, stemming his tears
Though they’ve paid their dues these past sixty years

But hey, Gove’s on the sherry and is quite off his tits
While his missus is battered and doing the splits
And Drunken Smith is a singing along with the Pogues
With the rest of the mob and a few Russian rogues

And the kids who are dreaming of gifts in the morning
Won’t get them- their benefits were stopped without warning
While those whose dosh is in off-shore accounts
Will be rubbing their hands as the total mounts

And the Waspi woman alone in her kitchen
Has long given up on Dancer and Blitzen
She was robbed of her pension, they don’t give a ****e
That she’s freezing and hungry on Christmas Eve night

And now, here’s the end of my last festive story

Don't forget to vote- unless you're a Tory.

I'm stealing that, if Babs doesn't mind. <whistle>

Stumbled across the environmental "hero" Stanley Johnson's thoughts on the level of literacy of the "Great British Public."

https://www.theguardian.com/politic...nley-johnson-suggests-uk-public-is-illiterate

Incidentally, I can spell the name Pinocchio, and I know what the particular reference refers to.
But what is he suggesting? That the national populace are generally dense? When it rather more a case of the quality of their education.
Does Stanley Johnson know the angle of repose of various soil types and structures? He doesn't? I could tell him that within a few seconds, and give him a basic understanding of the process [which is pretty much all I remember these days].

People are not thick. They may well be uneducated and certainly mislead though.

Ironically the thickest thing the UK public are likely to do is vote for this arrogant self-serving bunch of over-privileged old-Etonian twats

FLT, I don't know how old you are but when I was 30 I did a tour of Northern France. One day I did 170 kilometres ( about 105 miles). I was completely knackered but found that around 80 miles depending on the terrain was manageable. I reckon if you allow a week it should be possible .

I’m 50. Longest ride to date is 67 miles. I started cycling about 18 months ago and got to the point where I was doing 100-120 miles a week depending on work (and daylight hours).

It would be a challenge, but I’m tempted to have a go.

A gentle reminder that this is the Politics thread.

I would probably have to target 5-7 days I think.
There’s a thought... bring Franny. Nah, I’d never keep up.

Invite him and say you’ll provide the bike ...

...

... and get a tandem

I once did a sponsored ride in Holland
Thought it would be easy its so flat
Strong NE wind all weekend, I was going NE
It was like cycling uphill all the way
Knackering

You sure you can do 80-110 miles a day for that long?!?!

I have read that Johnson’s request to be interviewed by Andrew Marr has been knocked back with a “not until after your interview with Andrew Neil”.
Good, but has Johnson’s delay tactics already paid off?
John McDonnell was furious at the BBC for not tackling him sooner as he believes Johnson is holding out until after most postal votes have been sent in, in case the interview is a car crash.

Utter disgrace. Propaganda machine working overtime ..... and getting results looking at the latest opinion polls :emoticon-0121-angry
How the hell can this electorate STILL vote for this shower?
Now I’m being ticked off by my girlfriend and her family for posting too many political threads on Facebook .... They don’t want to hear how important this election is and say I’m being “boring” ...... :emoticon-0121-angry
I just don’t understand it ..... :emoticon-0114-dull:

No doubt that book is the rough draft of his autobiography, apart from the hero on a bike part..

Dump the girlfriend and her family and carry on as you are.
