Many people claim there is a majority for whatever they consider to be Brexit. Here's a thread of selected emails received yesterday by one MP. Read the thread, put yourself in his shoes and try to work out what action the MP is meant to take to reflect the views of these constituents. I genuinely feel a little weepy reading it, as it so accurately reflects where we are.

This is really beginning to get to me so I'm going to take a few days off. Hopefully it'll all be sorted by the time I'm back and we'll be in the sunlit uplands again.

How I wish I believed that.

Vin

PS. Please get a train to London and go on the People's Vote March (Saturday 12 noon, Park Lane southbound) to try to stop this disaster from happening. Please.

I like Wyn Evans MP response but let’s just skip to “step 6” now!!

“This is a very good thread.

Surely, the sensible and logical thing to do now is:

1. Revoke A50.
2. Hold a 12/18 month consultation on the different Brexit options.
3. Agree clear departure plan.
4. Trigger A50 II.
5. Negotiate and Leave.

If we can’t find consensus, Remain.”

So, after months and months of promising, our illustrious leader has backtracked on yet another decision, and asked for an extension.

I'm sure that will please both sides....

Reports coming out of France suggest Macron is threatening to veto her request.

I don't see why they should agree to an extension.

If they can't sort anything out in two years, what difference will a few more weeks make?

No way they will extend it to June, the next European elections take place in May. (You know the ones where they undemocratically elect new leaders. The scoundrels)

Looks like Europe has been telling the truth from the start and wont back an extension unless theres a real prospect of something being achieved.

Its around now i would push for a public vote on the final deals, once it looks like one of the leave options isn't going to get its way without public support behind it so they have to turn to the public to get it through so it can pick up votes from MP's previously opposed to it as well as an extension from the EU for the referendum. It would solve most of our current issues.

It was a 2 way vote on a 3 option issue. No side has a mandate, or can get one without another public vote. everyone thinking they have the majority and can push forward is really frustrating.

That statement basically sums up her whole reign as PM.

Blaming others for her mistakes.

Whether you’re a leaver or a remainer, she has to go. Utterly despicable woman. Worst PM in my lifetime by a country mile. I wouldn’t trust her to run a bath let alone run a country

No surprise there then! Perhaps he needs to watch his own country’s news more often. Bit going on there me thinks. He has obviously forgotten how many French cars etc are on our roads? I think that there is another less grandstanding E.U. view to be expressed yet.

Macron isn't threatening to veto in order to force a no deal; he's threatening it in order to force May to revoke Article 50. Another few weeks of chaos has no benefit for the EU, and no realistic chance of actually achieving a deal.

If youre after the measured EU response to Mays speech, its: "In the light of the consultations that I have conducted over the past days, I believe that a short extension will be possible, but it will be conditional on a positive vote on the Withdrawal Agreement in the House of Commons. "

Nissan has been asking us to end the uncertainty as soon as possible and i would be very surprised if French manufacturers weren't saying the same thing to Macron. Extension for no reason just hurts the economy.

True response will be tomorrow though after the summit.

No doubt Mrs Merkel will remind him what is needed and help complete his education in E.U. affairs. He has much to learn about them and for that matter democracy as well. But then that applies to any politician remotely or intimately involved in this sad affair. Corbyn refusing to attend a meeting because the IG were involved just caps it all. Are there any adults with sufficient knowledge and skill and status to cope with this situation? Cupboard looks a bit bare.

I don't think that Macron is wrong here. A continual series of cliffs and postponements serves no one. This needs certainty: either a short extension where, if no deal is reached, the UK either leaves or remains with no further option (ideally with that determined before the extension), or a long-term extension to allow this process to start over. Not six weeks now, and six weeks then, and on and on.
