I keep reading about how you can't throw your leg out and not get the ball, but from all the replays I've seen, the contact comes when Sterling leans in to cut across Wilson, which shouldn't be a penalty.

That's what I thought the pundits said on MOTD.

Haven't watched MOTD, saw it on Sky Sports and then again on SSN, with Danny Higginbotham reviewing and giving his thoughts, which were that it's wasn't a penalty. He said at first he thought the ref had blown to book Sterling for diving, which would also have been a wrong decision. From what I saw, and it seems Higgy saw the same, Wilson stuck his leg out, missed the ball, also missed Sterling, who then attempted to get round Wilson, but the two came together, and the smaller player inevitably went down.
At least we've got a scapegoat though, eh? It's a shame, as we had plenty of chances, hit the post and forced Mingolet into some decent saves late on, on another day it could have ended 5 or 6 all!

We have a make shift defence at present with Huth out, but as long as we are scoring goals we have a chance of picking up points and as you said it could have ended up 6-6.
