Pardew tactically inept?

Yep, I liked Pardews Sky Sports interview, very honest and casual about it. He knows everyone had a bad day today, including himself and is pleased we got a clean sheet out of it. Staying positive and keeping the spirit alive

don't know why pardew doesn't as he hinted at this formation pre season with ben arfa just behind the main striker he should play marv there as he has played the AM role at his old club as well as RW/LW

I just think Marveaux behind Best away would give us movement. Either or for me but Marveaux looks like he could be useful in the hole. Sometimes like tonight you need to make sure you match up so as to not lose control in midfield. A third one central who has freedom then lets your wingers get in better attacking positions too. I like Sammy, he works, has pace, skill and when adds a bit more know how can play a big part. He is better than Ba, Shola, Lover. He can also play in the hole. In home games I'd be inclined to go with him and give him his head.

I always like how Pards holds himself,doesn't make a **** of himself like some ex managers used to. Onwards and upwards!!!
Sorry, but I personally saw nothing from either Ba nor Marv to get anywhere near lighting the game up & Raylor has looked out of place in every game this season. Don't let his two fantastic goals misslead you as to his shortcomings at left back. Tbh I'd love to see Raylor command a fullback berth just to give us a chance of scoring from a free-kick now and then but he's just not up to scratch in this league and never has been.

you would think so,seems weird he states he'll play this then goes for 4-4-2 only to change it all around when ben arfa comes back you'd think he would have stuck with this formation from the get go and when ben arfa comes back just a smooth transition.
Im not to sure it is.... Okay we all know he has limited resources to work with which is no fault of his own, but he doesnt get the best out of what he has.... How many people on here agree Ameobi is not good enough, and yet Pardew consistently sticks with him almost like Capello with Heskey and look where that got him...It took him a while to even realise Loverkrands is poor at this level now....
Give S.Ameobi a chance if you look at Daglish okay he is a dick but hes not afraid to throw youth in there instead of playing dire older players... Id even like to see Vuckic given a chance maybe feeding of Best while Ben arfa is out... Man U have been tracking him for ages there must be a reason for that!
Dont even get me started on Pardews subs he always makes them at the wrong times, exemplified tonight, why bring on S.Ameobi on for like 5mins whats he going to do!
Again I agree, Marv has looked usefull to an extent but so far too lightweight. Hopefully he can adjust, plenty of time yet (as time is so commonly needed for his style of player to adjust to this league)! Sameobi deserves a chance more so than the others imo and Beni from what little I have seen of him would fit into the freedom role better than the rest (he's not too far away now thank ****).

Even the best get it wrong sometimes. Sounds like he took on board how his lack of activity subs wise didn't help. I was unimpressed with him when we got him and thought his record really suspect. But he has done ok to quite well and is not tactically inept. It was a learning game. Alex Ferguson, possibly one of the greatest managers of all time, had one recently against Barca afterall. Ok its QPR but they have some good players with excellent PL knowledge now. As long as he doesn't keep making the same mistakes and gets results in keeping with our status, I can't see what's to complain about.
I agree with what you are saying but the thing that frustrated me was there were numerous errors in tactics tonight and he was unwilling to change and almost just hoped for some luck, which he ended up getting.....The thing that is worrying is he seems to love Ameobi and hides behind the assumption we are low on strikers so we have no-one better. Best has proved himself to be the best striker so surely a 4-5-1 would have been the best option mainly due to the facst that, thats how the other team was set up and midfield is our strongest area.. These are basics in management and Pardew has been around awhile. I hope his eyes have been opened tonight.
Also I personally feel 4-4-2 is becoming outdated unless you have a very good team!
Very true, substitutions are a managers secert weapon, they can change a game, feel we are missing a trick...

It was clear at half time something needed to change, yet he didn't bother trying. Also where is this attractive football we where all promised? We've played mainly hoofball and produced nothing. The only time we've scored from open play is a tap in and some fluent passing play to set up Best. Surely it's clear to anyone when we play on the deck we play a damn sight better.
You can see us trying it at times, I just get the impression it will take a while to adjust to it. More play like we see from Cabaye, Jonas, Tiote and Obertan will help make the transition quicker but I never saw it being an instantaneous thing.
You need more of a 4-4-1-1. You need that player to link the play. It can still be a forward thinking player with freedom like what Rooney does for Man U. Sammy or Marveaux would be choice until Benny is back. Don't get me wrong I thought Pardew was far too inactive tonight. I'm just willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and I think he has the capability to learn and not be stubborn. I think this is one of the upsides to him having had a bit of a topsy turvy career and a period out. You self analyse better. Unless your fat sam and you're too arrogant to understand why you've got the bullet!
The Ameobi love has to stop. He is killing our game. I realise folk love him because of his mackem killings and because he's a nice lad, but we can't allow him to continue handicapping our team. The new lads who want to play football need some movement ahead of them, they'll soon get fed up with us being disjointed. These lads will graft but they don't wanna just graft and grind tight games all the time, they want to play. Cheick is obviously a problem at present too. Best was shattered tonight. Why? Because he did Shola's running for 60mins. I'm not a big Best fan but the lad grafts his bollocks off and gets chances. We need to take a load off him. I realise he wants to protect Marveaux because he is injury prone, has not had a lot of football, is lightweight, adapting to new league and language, but sometimes playing is the best cure for that. Failing that give young Sammy his head. He looks lively and will run all day long.
To be fair to Pardew, and contrary to a lot of the fans on here, I don't think Sammy is the man to fill the hole. Great player and needs to be on the pitch longer, but his footwork and pace work when he is beating players and cutting inside, I think he'd get lost a bit with a free roll and IF he loses possession in the center of the pitch, its harder to cover his mistake. Pardew looked like he was given Haris a decent run out last game and his injury was just unfortunate!

I don't think he's tactically inept but that he was just afraid/ashamed to play 5 man in midfield. We were supposedly the favourites going into the game and switching to a 4-5-1 formation , after just 45 mins, and at 0-0, is bad image for a team having top 10 aspirations. But if you want to be a football manager, you should have the balls to make the hard but necessary decisions (like dropping Raylor and Shola) and you shouldnt give a sh*t about what the fans/press/pundits think(like Pulis).
