I used to love going to away games in the 1980's £5 coach fair about £3 to get in, Liverpool, Sheff u, Sheff w, Notting f twice, Notts county, Villa, Ipswich, Newcastle, Boro, Chelsea (1985 league cup riot game !), Wembley twice,(original and then seated) not the new one though. Cambridge, Bolton, Northampton, Barnsley, York( goal posts smashed game 1987-88 !), Carlisle, derby, Stoke, Man u twice, Man c, Leeds, anyone been to all the top grounds ? never been abroad though.

….. and Preston
Ffs, man....it would have been quicker to list the ones FURTHER than Hull at this rate.

But apart from that, what have the Romans done for us?

"The Aquaduct"...I knew that was coming...

I'm never getting involved in owt to do with geography again....had a right bloody nightmare.

when you throw in Blackburn, Burnley, Barnsley & Rotherham It is difficult to disagree.

Hull is closer than Blackpool though, by about 10 miles!

My first away game was scunthorpe in the second round of the FA Cup that was some introduction to away days

One of the relevant things as well is that I would guess...and it is only a guess.... a larger percentage of our loyal fans live away from the area. That's the way I've always perceived it.....I don't know whether I'm right or wrong......but I have this idea that a significant number of our away attendance don't actually travel from Sunderland area to the matches, they're dotted around all over the place, which in many cases, makes the travel time a lot less for some. Of course, we always have the longer journey to the home matches!
I had wondered this as well. I wonder if over the years more of us have moved away for work? I did and am still an exile, but there a more than a couple of supporters branches not far away and I know plenty of Sunderland in this area I share the odd lift with, both home and away.

It would be declared a national emergency these days.

Massive gang of Leeds roaming the town, fighting before, during and after the game, plus a total lack of policing.

If it was tomorrow night there'd be a thread lasting weeks analysing what happened ...

... in those days it was almost a weekly occurrence.

Yet it's getting increasingly hard to get tickets to away matches. I live in Essex and have ST, mainly so I can keep my loyalty points for away matches. I can't get tickets now though, despite having over 20 points.

Watford away would be my nearest away this season, but they were sold out on 40 points I think.

(This is a blatant begging post, to see if anyone has 2 spares!)

They had knocked a wall down and left the skip full of bricks near the exit of the away end, they then allowed us to congregation behind they exit gates then decided we weren't going out and started pushing us back causing a horrendous crush.
That's when the bricks started getting lobbed over the wall, then someone decided to pick up horse **** and throw it at the police ( that was funny )
When they finally let us out it was like a bomb site, every car had windows smashed dents all over, I wasn't sure if I'd go to an away game again.
I did the next one was york city away ffs I certainly picked them
