They can't say sorry because they might get held accountable in some way, for me this is a question of ethics and they should say sorry anyway. That's why I don't have any sympathy for them at all. (edited blame to accountable in some way)
no sympathy for the aussies in this , tho' im not sure i believe whats reported in how the nurses management and directors reacted to the news initially .
I have sympathy for the DJs because obviously they never intended for this to happen and they have to live with it forever now.
But I can't get my head around their stupidity! A woman is in hospital due to pregnancy (argue all you like about how necessary it was that she was in there) and they decided to play a prank phone call?!! Unbelievable! Even without the obviously much bigger case with the nurse killing herself which has made this whole thing a truly shocking affair, how this happened without anyone suggesting maybe they shouldn't have done it to begin with I'll never know

good post. Watching the interviews was heartbreaking but as you say, it was a very stupid thing to do. An hospital is not a place to ring and play pranks on someone.
Maybe its my age, but I didnt think there was anything wrong with the prank. The aftermath is another matter.
For a pair of aussies with a crap accent, to be put through to the ward a royal was being treated on, without any security checks etc is mental. Even if you ring Hull Royal, you get the standard, are you a member of the family, blah blah blah.

Media pranks on the public have been around for decades, Candid Camera, Beadles About, and DJ,s have been phoning around for years to help boost ratings and getting themselves known etc. People like that **** or they wouldnt do it, we all watch funny clips of pranks on unsuspecting people on youtube. Although it wasnt a thought out prank they carried it out and recorded it, now someone else at the radio station (a little bit like an editor of a newspaper)deemed it suitable enough to put on the air, while they had a part to play it wasnt them who aired the recording.
Its a prank that has gone tragically wrong. If the DJ,s never come up with the prank, If the nurse on duty that night saw through the silly accents and put the phone down, if the hospital had had some sort of protocol against people enquiring after VIP,s, If the radio station powersa to be had pulled the plug on the prank being aired and probably a few other things that I dont know about then the prank would have been forgotten about by now.

What I don't get in amongst this is that to me pranks have comedy value by their nature - as guitartrax says - game for a laugh, beadle etc - I don't see where the comedy value was in this it was just a ridiculous attempt to evade security rather than be funny at all. Thats why I don't feel sorry for anyone involved in setting this stunt, not prank, up. Someone on 5 live today said that they all "had blood on their hands" a bit strong given you can't predict the effect of any action on an individual unless you know a bit about them but I have to say I am more on that side than having any sympathy for the Aussies in question.

They said they are sorry on the interview so I take back what I said, that should be enough really. They didn't set out to kill anybody, stupid prank with tragic consequences but the poor lady in question must have had other issues going on if that was enough for her to take her own life.
No sympathy at all for the pair of them.

The only thing funny about Jeremy Beadle was his little hand and it seems even the Germans have a better sense of humour then the convicts. Hospitals are not the place for pranks.
I don't mind ****taking, when you're in the pub with your mates or at work, when you can give it back. These radio ''pranks'' in my mind are just to make someone look or sound stupid.
Saying that, as someone said above, this nurse must unfortunately have had other issues to end her life over this. Any ''sane'' person would have felt stupid to be caught out by the ''prank'' and forgotten about it, it's not something you'd end the most precious thing you have over.

such pranks don't amuse me but i can't blame them for the woman killing herself.
To be fair the comic value wasn't the prank phone call itself, it was because it was so badly carried out. Utter ****e infact.
