Right bumping this thread up with three questions that appeared on the Watford website before our cup match and forwarded by my Watford mate Jeremy. The man who wrote them is happy for me to reproduce them here.

‘Below are three groups of clubs that Watford and QPR both belong to. The
question is, what connects each group of clubs?

Group 1: Watford, QPR, Norwich, WBA, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Newcastle,
Crystal Palace, Blackburn, Bolton, Man City, Leicester, Charlton, Derby,
Birmingham, West Ham, Hull, Wolves, Reading, Sheffield United, Burnley, Forest, Ipswich.

Group 2: Watford, QPR, Arsenal, Man City, Everton, Liverpool, Tottenham,
Brighton.

Group 3: Watford, QPR, Charlton, Bristol City, Oldham, Cardiff,
Southampton, Blackpool.’

I didnt get one of them

I am not sure if it helps but when we got the answers there is a 4th group

Group4: Watford, QPR and Bristol City

Group two is losing FA Cup finalists in the 80s.

Group 3 and 4 are connected..group 4 is a super group within group 3, if you know Venn diagrams.

Is Group 1 teams relegated from Premier League?

Group 3 teams promoted consecutively from 3rd to top tier?...

Sooper Group 1 ...relegated from the premier league more than once

To help you will group 3 and 4..."always the bridesmaid"

Sorry for delay in answering...been busy elsewhere, but more of that somewhere else

Is this thread dead? I’ve got a good question but no idea of what the current, and apparently abandoned, question means, let alone what the answer is.

The clues have narrowed it down a lot. Ireland & Scotland?
Good thinking but no.
Cricket was once the most popular game in the USA so was it them against Canada ?
Yes it was, match in Manhattan in 1844, often cited as the first ‘modern’ international sporting event, seven years before the first Americas Cup race, and 33 years before the first Ashes Test. Though I suspect it was a match between two teams from those countries rather than two national representative selections. Cricket was huge in the US before the introduction of baseball in the 1870s, and still big enough for a team from Philadelphia to beat the Aussies in 1893.
