The Indian Mutiny/First War of Independence/Rebellion was caused by many factors, but what was the final spark which caused the initial mutiny of East India Company native soldiers at Meerut?

If Uber remembers his Flashman he’ll get this.

I've heard this before, I think. It's something about some kind of pig extract (?) on the bullets or some such thing.

That’s close enough. Rumours spread that the new cartridges being issued for new Enfield rifles were greased with both beef and pig fat. As the cartridges needed to be bitten to be used this was a real problem for both Hindu and Muslim soldiers, who thought the British were trying to break their religions. They were told that there was no animal fat in the grease, and that they could have ungreased cartidges and grease them themselves, but the damage had been done. 90 men were told to perform a drill with the new cartridges and 85 refused, were court martialed and given 5-10 year sentences. Their colleagues rose up and the slaughter began.

It’s a really fascinating and incredibly bloody bit of history, brilliantly described in George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman in the Great Game.

What well-known structure is painted 'international orange', and, if you get the answer to that, why is it named as it is?

Yes, the 'black box' is actually orange, but bright orange and not international orange.

Sorry stroller, not trying to be oiky ...but check sites like Britannia airways or a website called 8 things you never knew about black boxes.

It says black boxes are painted International orange ... international orange is a standard paint for making things noticeable...

Happy for the lovely kiwi to set the next question though...

A spear dipped in poison with which they were meant to stab the infant, who had the evil eye. Sadly, they missed their chance and now we are saddled with an expensive and rather nasty waste of space.

I beg your pardon Beth, I'm sure you're right about the colour. However, I wouldn't call a box a structure, would you? Oh, and Mr Black....really?:emoticon-0100-smile

An offer from a Gambian Prince who was needing help move funds out of the country - all they had to do in return was provide him with their full bank details and PIN.

Spent all night researching this Stroller.
    Bloody trivia questions.

Black boxes are painted international orange...but was put together by an Australian engineer called Warren ...there is quite a lot of references to a Mr or Dr Black on the web, so there are a number of people like me that thought the same, but the guy called Warren said in an interview to the Guardian newspaper, that he knew no one on the original team who put the original aviation black box together called Black. However the very first prototypes were black and called black boxes....but obviously when they were used properly they were painted International orange for visibility reasons

and so it is an old wives tale. I apologize, but it has cleared up a long held misunderstanding on my part
