enjoyed reading this thread and the opinions, i dont post much but read alot. So i thought i would hoy in my 2 pence or cents so to speak. Wish i knew how to multi quote . oh well.
Ive lived both sides of the pond currently in the us. This is my second spell outside of the UK.
Lived in the Cayman islands for 5/6 years straight out of uni (just wasting time really, beachbum and bartender).
Came back to Sunderland and decided to settle down. WOW what a shock to the system i can tell you. It took me 6 months to find a job, and im by no means fussy, even applied at mcdonalds. Finally i found a job at 2touch call center and took at least 20 hours overtime a week, then my 1st paycheck came. **** ME, after taxes and NI felt like i had enough for a cuppa, match ticket and a pasty. Gutted was not the word. Kept applying for better jobs and night jobs, trying to better my life, took another 6 months before i got a job in KULA's on vine st. Started Bar-tending (well scrubbing **** of the bog ceilings and mopping up puke) 7 nights a week. Grand total of near enough 100 hours a week for a shocking 450 pounds sterling.
So killing myself with work meant i couldn't spend anything except for rent ($45 a week room by the Royalty) , grub, ***s, bus fare and the very occasional match. But i did manage to buy a half decent car in cash after about 6 months, only to be robbed by insurance company. Skint again. But i wasn't wasting 1 to 2 hrs a day on the bus and was convinced i would find a great job soon. I had the car for 3 weeks before some **** keyed it. 6 weeks after that nicked !!!!! ****!!
Did 6 more months of 100 hour weeks saving saving saving saving and applying for jobs and grants. was thinking maybee i needed to go back to uni and get my masters. All the time watching the lazy ****s next door popping out bairns, smoking, drinking all day and night, fighting, music bouncing keeping me up, racially abusing the corner shop owners and robbing all on my taxes. Always in a new pair of trainers, drinking at the bar i worked at, going to the matches i was missing because of work. They live in a 4 bedroom house, me a 10 x 10 box room.
final straw was my house got broken into and the tv i just bought nicked! by the little ****s next door. Police caught him but he had already sold the tv, and cos he was only 14 i got nowt apart from abuse from them next door 3 days missed work and the fact that "JUSTICE " was done........... WTF?
Thats it (5 hours sleep a night, and a run of events that are 2 damn comical) , handed my 2 weeks notice in at both jobs and bought a plane ticket to Toronto and began traveling. Had a great time met the wife, saw alot of the world and decided when the money was all gone we would settle in her home state South Carolina.
Ive not been here long and ive grafted like an idiot 100+ hours a week. Started off living in the Ghetto, couldnt find a decent job, but stuck to my plan of working 2 jobs. open my own business at a flea market and now we live in a nice home with a pool, both have decent cars, a beautiful baby girl, a full time store and 2 seasonal ones and some cash in the bank. In 3 ish years. I never felt i could achieve half of that in the uk NEVER. Still working 100+ hours a week during peak seasons (summer and xmas), but i feel like im working toward something.
You don't have to be "Talented, rich or special " to make it here im not, it helps but hard graft and determination wins every time ( and i have a **** ton). That and the tax is much lower leaving you more dispensable income, which i used to try and build something.
Yes the poor here are very very very poor. Fortunately for me the only reason they are is because they choose to be. They only get unemployment benefits , to the tune of what they put in, when its gone its gone. Housing is paid for directly to the landlord as is power and water. Food is given to them in stamp form, not cash they can blow on beer and ***s (although some sell them). Medical cost are paid for. What they dont get is CASH. Some people need help and they do recieve it, some take advantage, but i dont feel taken advantage of.
I bust my nuts and it goes in my pockets, **** paying for anyone elses beer , ***s and nights out. I miss my family ( never saw them anyway working all the time), footy ( never saw it anyway working), bacon and a proper cup of tea ( think they use badger milk here).
if that disjointed rant has upset anyone , wasn't meant to and my apologies. Ive an immigration review on the 5th june and im ****ting it incase i have to leave ...... any one giz a job if i come back
